Sounds like PCV gets blocked intermittently. My V70 started smoking out tailpipe alot one winter morning, turned out my aftermarket oil separator that I added in line to the stock pcv line froze solid and blocked the pcv line. It stopped once I unplugged it. This may have happened to you (not the freezing part, but a blockage), the engine shutting off and not starting could be from spark plugs foulung from all the oil. I'd pull the plugs, crank it over with them removed to blow out the cylinders, install new ones and see what happens.

Update: The engine shut down that I described in my last post was entirely due to the fact that the plug connected to the fuel injection relay that sits just above the radiator worked itself loose. The module was repaired at a shop (for a ridiculous amount I might add, given that Parts Geek is currently selling replacements at $25) and then I picked up a spare one at a salvage yard and must not have connected it snug enough and it worked its way loose over the course of a couple of years or so.
Update: Engine shut down described in last post turned out to be due to the plug coming loose on fuel injector relay. As soon as I pushed the plug snug, the engine started. Exhaust still smoking burning oil when engine is warmed up and idling, but somehow barely any oil consumption after a couple of recent 700 km highway trips. And car runs with same power and turbo boost as it did before the smoking began.

Try coming down a long hill , in Third gear, at least a minute of hard overrun, and at the bottom give the gas pedal a healthy tromp.

Have you checked your brake fluid? If your booster is leaking it can get sucked into the engine and burn white.

Go to a local Porsche repair shop and obtain the Swepco 306 15W-40 or 308 5W-40. "Long drain service up to 100,000 miles or 600 hours with LOA Program". They provide the Coast Guard, UPS, United, Mining, Big Rigs etc... with an oil analysis for free of charge and keep track of the machinery in question. Actually their spec doesn't tell it all but the longevity and smooth running of the equipment is why large conglomerates even Chevron use their products. I use to be friends with the Rep that serviced the Chevron Refinery In Richmond CA.
