96 850 turbo smoking oil after evap valve clean out

Post by Raul_duke »

My 96 850 turbo was in great shape or so I thought. Got it a year or so ago with 86k on it. It had been running a p0440 error code almost since it got it. I Read on this site somewhere that it wasn't a big deal. So I just checked it periodically and cleared the code as it popped up. One time I got p0172 I think. Anyway it was a fuel system too rich code. I put some seafoam brand fuel system "cleaner" with no change... Long story short... I came back from vacation 10+ days. And battery was dead so I jumped it. I needed to run an errand so I let it run for about 40 mins then drove for 20 mins. I let the car idle for another 40 mins or so at my destination to charge battery. So far so good. When I departed I noticed everyone on the street watching me. Took me a minute to notice the trail of smoke coming from the tail pipe :( Did some research and diagnosed as bad/impaired pcv due to smoke from dipstick at idle. I did a pcv job. New everything except for PTC. I just cleaned that out. I also replaced various deteriorated vacuum lines which was pretty much all of them. I was so stoked to finish and was elated when i had no smoke from dipstick and passed the glove test. I had a rubber glove sucking into the oil fill. 1500 miles later I had a p0440 again. I was so happy at having no check engine light on that I was determined to keep it that way. So i changed the remaining vacuum line at the front of intake manifold that leads to a check valve and the evap purge valve. After checking the purge valve I found it stuck open. I could blow right through it. I read tutorials on how to crack it open and put RTV in there and also read that spraying it liberally with carb/choke cleaner can work. It did. Now I can't blow through it. And checked it with 12v source. To finish the job off I replaced both upper and lower torque mounts. Then I started the car let it warm up and first thing I noticed was boost gauge was reading slightly higher(could be my imagination). Then I noticed the smoke was back after 1500+miles of nothing. No smoke out of dipstick, but fails glove test. It doesn't suck in but doesn't inflate either. I thought maybe it was the new vacuum hose so I pulled it at the check valve and car ran rough from loss of vacuum, until I covered Hose with my finger. All the while performing glove test to look for changes. No change.
My next step is pulling the intake to check the pcv hoses/ connections. Is there anything I can do to diagnose/fix oil smoke? Please I beg the volvo gods on this forum for their best.

Ps. Sorry for typos and syntax; Hiding under My desk at work on my iPhone.
