20" channel locks every time. Good to know I'm not the only one using them!

It sounds like I need to find the right size cap or maybe use the strap for the smooth Mann filter. I'm mostly concerned with finding a good solution for installation....for tightening just a bit more than hand tight. Today, I used a smaller filter, but later when I go back to the standard diameter, I'm not sure that I'll be able to grab tightly a hold of it given it's proximity to the pan sides.

I did have a plastic cap snap in half several years ago.
Forgot where I saw this yesterday but the filter is tightened 1 full turn after making contact then backed off just a little. Oh, a zip lock is part of the tools as it wraps around the filter, when possible to catch the oil. 03 Honda Odyssey.
I've heard of using a bag, also seen a cup demonstrated. I could try it, although I'm not crazy about having an oily bag.

I removed the Odyssey filter using one hand as I didn't jack up the van. Used the extractor so no need to drain the oil with the pan. I always use gloves of course but the inside of the bag did become slippery and due to spacing didn't corporate spinning 360 with the filter.

Either use one hand to hold up the zip bag while the other hand turn or use a grocery bag and tie a rubber band around the top then spin it with the zip-lock over it. Guarantee no mess outside. I don't trust the grocery bag but it's thin so can spin. The oily bag becomes a none issue while spinning. I do drain the oil from the bag and filter.

If using the grocery bag just snip a hole at the bottom edge and it'll drip out nicely then put the whole thing in the zip-lock for disposal. Thank you for reminding me of the oily bag as I just thought of the second bag solution. I will give that a go next time :D.

I purchased a set of 4 from HB I think in the mid 90's when I tried giving auto repair a try as an occupation. Short live for sure! Only used the 20" for squeezing brake piston back and oil filter. Not completely useless but for those jobs excellent.

I have had two 3 legged types in my life.

The first was made my Lisle and it was fantastic. Never slipped, always worked, never failed.

Then I misplaced it.
I only noticed I misplaced it after I drained the oil in a car and had to run to run to Napa and grabbed one from their Evercraft line

It was 100% garbage. The ends of the legs were formed in a way that it would NOT grab onto the filter at all and just slipped 100% of the time. I used that tool once and in the garbage it went and it was enough for me to vow never to buy anything from the Evercraft line again. (Note: their sockets were fine but the accessory tools seem to be junk)

The thing to watch out for on the 3 legged style is you have to size it for your filter to some extent. They only open so far and the one I had from Lisle was sized for much smaller filters than the one for our Volvos.

Thank you for that assessment. I think I'm going to look for the cap style in the proper sizes. In the case of the Mann filter and others with no flats, I'll use my strap wrench to finish tightening it.

I think I'll also get some big Channellocks, and possibly the filter pliers, to have on hand. I may end up using those for removal instead of the strap wrench.

Next question for anyone that has one, the plastic cover that fits under the car... does that need to be removed to change the oil. or does it not extend back that far? I'd like to get one, as I suspect it may help with mileage, cooling and protection of some of the things hanging down low in the front. For whatever reason, I'm missing that piece, but it seems to be available new from the aftermarket.
