And won't it constantly spew transmission oil out the hole.

About 102K miles. Yes, is being removed is kind of a mystery. It's got some body damage too, but nothing severe. I'm going to take a closer look at it today. Yesterday I was time limited, and spent most of my time looking at other vehicles.Blacklab467 wrote: ↑19 Oct 2022, 03:00 Wow! I've never seen that! It's got low miles right? Don't know why they'd remove that CV shaft and continue to drive it, definitely where the shudder is coming from but the bigger question is: why did the remove it and not put another shaft in?

Ok, so I was actually able to drive the car today. That's not something I'm typically able to do. The shudder is quite noticeable, and it will even do it when not moving (I think I was in drive). I think it's the system getting confused on where to send power.
I took a look at the output on the trans, and it looks like it has part of the CV shaft in place. It's not broken/sheared, but like it was disassembled. There is some oil/dirt on the area, but probably not any more than any other car.
Given that I have no experience with AWD in general, much less the Volvo Haldex system, I'm going to pass. That's potentially a bigger project than I need/want.
I also looked at the XC90, and was not all that impressed. Like the V70 it seemed sluggish off the line. I was also disappointed it didn't feel as solid as my P80, but more than that it felt a little clapped out. Might have something to do with the muffler/silencer having fallen off... it was loud.

I would not worry too much about the AWD. Many of these are running without the Haldex working. The usual issue is it needs a new filter and pump which is what Erik was saying earlier. I would also think you are correct on the assumption the car does not know what to do with the not responsive axle.
Auction cars are always a lottery. Both mine cost me a lot of money to fix. They usually end up there as owners don't want to maintain them and when the 'biggie' failure comes along they run as hard as they can away from it.
Not a huge job to fit an axle, but you are right to be cautious as you don't know what driving it like that may have done. It could also be a broken engine mount on that side so check the crank pulley mount for separation.
Good luck with the hunt!
Neil.

It's great that I wouldn't have to have it active for the car to be derivable, but I'm still a bit worried that the car is more damaged than simply a missing CV axle. Also, part of the point of this car in particular is that AWD would be great for the winter. I don't know.... maybe if this thing goes cheap.
Engine mount, huh. I'll have to look. I know the V70 engine moved a bit..... I had another guy looking at the car when I was and he mentioned it.Not a huge job to fit an axle, but you are right to be cautious as you don't know what driving it like that may have done. There plenty of decent P2 material out there. No reason to look at the junkers.

Agreed on P2 availability, however finding one that is not hopelessly overpriced is another story.

I'm primarily looking for a "winter beater" to preserve my rust free 850, so I'm fine with a P2 with defects. I just need to find a car (P2 or otherwise) with acceptable defects. The XC70, for instance must have had a minor front end accident as it has new headlight, and a dented hood. It looks like maybe something heavy fell on the hood right above the headlight. It opens and closes just fine, so it's not an issue for me. Having that area perfect wouldn't get me through the snow any better. On the other hand, I do need the powertrain to be fully functional.
