Since the breed of the current axle is unknown, straight replacement will get the car back on its hands and feet; you can do the teardown on your own terms then, and if you don't see any obvious damage throw a boot kit at the old one and have a ready spare.
I put generic Autozone axles in my late, departed '94 850, and they were still ding fine 80k later when the car met its untimely demise.
Roll of the dice, could be fine.
I spent a good deal of time in a transmission specialty shop; those guys were careful to avoid damaging the transmission case, but had no problem being brutal pulling stubborn half shafts.

Easiest way to tell if you have Volvo axles is check the diameter. All the aftermarket ones look like twigs by comparison. Weight would be another easy way to tell.

If they don’t just slide out , then stop, there is something there I don’t know about. I’ve done about 6 over the past three years that just slid out

I got frustrated and forced the tripod out of the carrier. I examined the roller bearings and it looks like they didn't get damaged. Well, now I can't get them back in.

There isn't much about this from google. I hope it is ok to post a quote/link from another forum, as this is useful...

"Found a comment online that the inner tripod might be staked in. To remove it may require a little grinding to open things up so that the rollers will slide out. That could be good or bad in the long run.

You can see the staking on the carrier on either side of the roller in the picture. It forms a small lip at the end of the roller track so the tripod won't come out of the carrier."

I seem to recall having a similar experience with an axle but on the LHS front. The bearings came out the cup but I could not get them back in. Again I had heard they should come out and go back in easily. I found a good axle at the junkyard with Volvo label still on it and good boots and swapped it in instead. I might still have that in the garage some place.

Looking closely at your pictures where you are removing the shaft and bearings, it does look like the ends have been staked if you take another look. I think you are on the right path and grind them or file them. Maybe try a deburring tool? You can then re-stake them once you get the bearings back in.

Thanks. I never heard of a deburring tool before, I just googled it now. I'll try to pick up one of these tools after work. Never heard of 'staking' either until today, I don't think I'll bother if everyone else's slide out (for P80s).

Staking is really just generating a burr on the edge to reduce the chance of the axle overextending. You can use a small punch or center punch to just fold over a small amount at the inner edge.
