Re: Axle coming out of transmission housing!
I agree with abscate, the gap looks correct/typical.

Thanks for all your replies and info!
I did get everything back together, including raising the wheel/control arm prior to torqueing down. And...after running a few errands,
there is still transmission fluid leaking (not gushing, but can see the film) and covering the bottom of the housing, subframe, etc.
Should I consider changing the seal or the snap ring/retaining clip at the end of the axle?

Just the seal. Clean with brake cleaner, dry with paper towel. You could half seal it with Permatex sealer to glue the seal in place, too.
The open part of the snap ring should be up when you install the axle , per jimmy57

Well that sucks! Questions:
1) Is the axle an OE one? If so does it have a wear ridge on it so the seal is not tight on it as it needs to be to seal?
2) Could there be a slight crack or nick in the seal lip?
3) What brand of seal did you use?
Neil.

I am not sure if the axle is an OE axle. I would have to remove the axle to determine if there is a wear ridge, then remove the seal to determine if it has been compromised. The circlip is square (not rounded) as can be seen in one of the above pics. I have ordered an OE clip from FCP. Once that comes in, I'll be able to replace the existing clip and hope that solves the problem. If not, then I'll pull the seal.
I purchased the seal from FCP; the seal is not a genuine Volvo part but is an OE seal as per FCP's description. If I can find the order form/shipping info, I'll post the part number.

If it is Corteco brand then it should be good. If it is damaged in any way then it doesn't matter the brand.
The rest will have to wait for the part to arrive.
Good Luck!
Neil.

The new spring clip (see above picture for location) is in. My question now given the grinding noise of the transmission when trying to put in reverse (never got it into reverse), is should I remove the axle in order to replace the spring clip?
And does it make sense to replace the seal as well?
Still trying to figure out what is happening with the transmission!

Is it hard to get into gear compared to other manual cars you've owned? If so, it's possible the clutch isn't fully disengaging as the pressure plate may be damaged. There should be some pics out there of the one done on grunhilde that showed 2 out of the 3 contact points were sheared off, and thus the clutch couldn't fully disengage.5rivers wrote: ↑09 May 2023, 16:33 The new spring clip (see above picture for location) is in. Replace all seals with Cortico or Volvo. Make sure to install them correctly this time. Verify the shaft journals are clean and don't have any imperfections as that will cause a leak. Output shaft seal shown for example (If I remember correctly.) Spring should 99.9% of the time be facing inwards to the transmission. Other side - use a little permatex if you have any gouge in the mating surface the seal is being drive into or it will leak. This side had such done because there was a small gouge. What gear oil have you been using? (I'm often late to these conversations so my apologies for any questions already answered that I breezed over...)

Are you using ATF or Gear oil? That looks like ATF to me...
The very first picture you posted looks like a 'sealed bearing' with no seal after it... Unless my eyeballs aren't working right...

Have used ATF. The output shaft seal was changed a few years ago, but it might need to be replaced.
