Remember you can do the valve stem seals without pulling the head - I agree that it would be a shame to pull the head. Doesn't matter how careful you are, it will never go back on as well as it did at the factory.
Wait, this is news to me. You can replace the valve stem seals without pulling the head?

I don't really want this to become a $2000 engine swap. The engine, timing kit, gaskets, pcv, and oil pressure gauge are already pushing it over $1000.

Went to buy more MMO, but that stuff has gotten expensive, over $8 / qt. So I'm just going to flush it out with 5W-30 that was on sale for $3 / qt.

I think you'll learn everything you really need to know at this point by doing a compression test. As I recall from a previous thread, you're just trying to get your primary ride back on the road.
The transmission should get a front seal if it goes in the car - but, again, I seem to recall it's a manual.

You pull the cam cover and cams. You're already pulling the timing belt.

It does require some extra tools, but they aren't expensive.

It's a tedious PITA to try and do the exhaust seals while the engine is in the car. I made a special tool to do those, as it would've cost me my sanity trying to use that lever tool shown in the pic to do them.

My wife's car needs seals now, and I'm not looking forward to that job.

Don’t forget to watch Roberts video on doing stem seals on-car.

Almost ready to do the compression test. Almost forgot to cap off the oil cooler and turbo lines. That would have been a mess. I can just loop the oil cooler lines. Will need to find a threaded plug for the turbo supply.
