I cleaned up the terminals on the OBD 1 block. The B block apparently uses the same fly wire and test button for both A & B—hopefully, because there is no button or wire on B side.
Key in position II
I've tested several things, all with key at position II.
Cleaned up the OBD 1 sockets and got a code on A2 which I expected; appears to be the O2 sensor.
Cleaned up B1 socket and tested with fly wire. That socket lights when button is pressed but doesn't report a code. It should.
B2 and B5 report codes, so it appears that the B socket circuits are good.
I replaced the original presumed bad resistor. At first I think the fan ran, but not on retest. The little orange lights don't light up.
And changing the damper door selector doesn't seem to get a response.
So....?

Just rereading the posts on this thread. My mood was way off base. Guys had lots of helpful suggestions and abscate mentioned that he had some damper motors I might be able to use. I want to thank you all for trying to guide me—I was just feeling defeated and dour. That's not like me. I guess I'm still feeling kind of down from the death of close brother and a bout with COVID a few weeks ago.
I've gone through this car's suspension, top to bottom, replace tie rod ends, done the axle boots and seals at the transmission. New shocks at the rear.
There are zero leaks anywhere, brakes and rear lines were renewed not too long ago. Has 3 very good tires. Engine starts instantly down to 10-15 degrees F. Needs an O2 sensor, which I have and still will probably install.
Fuel system is all good. Siunroof works. All lights and switches work. Since 2011 I've only driven it during winter and it has been reliable.
I recall when I first got it in 2008 the lower damper door for footweel heat didn't work. The damper motor worked but the plastic drive post that operates the damper had split. After sleeving the post it has worked. I have an inventory of spare parts that actually includes an ECC dash unit. It's used but I recall it tested okay on my my 96 GLT wagon. I don't recall if I tested it on the 93 but I don't want to risk it either. I'm assuming that's where the fault is since the fuse is good but that's only for the fan motor; damper motors don't respond in addition to the fan not working and there are no codes.
At first, the LED didn't light at all on socket B 1, then after testng B2 and B5 and getting expected codes, the LED lit when plugged into B1 but no codes flashed.
If I can find a used ECC dash unit and maybe swap in a fan motor I might try that.
It just feels like maybe it's time to give up on it for winter driving —not that I do much driving in any season anymore. But it will be tough to let it go. I'll need to decide.
Thanks again to all for your suggestions!
