But I am very puzzled why the Park is not engaging.
Yes, Park not engaging is a mechanical link from the shift lever cable to the parking linkage and pawl in the transmission, no hydraulics or electricals so should be checked out first. There is some adjustment available with the neutral safety switch and shift cable. In the photo I believe this what the shaft position should look like when in neutral, the flat side edges of the shaft should be parallel to the line in black area of the switch when in neutral. There's a tool that clamps onto the trans linkage shaft with an arrow pointer to the neutral reference line but I think you can sight the shaft flat edges to the line for an adjustment check. Not sure if this adjustment will help with the shift problems but Park should always engage correctly. The linkage also controls the manual valve position in the valve body so if out adjustment it may cause shift problems too but I can't say for sure. Adjustment is made by loosening the switch two mounting bolts and rotating the switch and I think the cable can be adjusted if needed.

I am thinking its an electrical or brain issue. It will act up, turn off the key, and start again and it will go away. 10-15 minutes later it will do the same thing. Cleaned the moldex harness plugs with contact cleaner yesterday but no improvement. It did show a communication fault with the differential control unit yesterday, which it never showed before. I guess i will keep playing with it, trying to eliminate one thing at a time.
Park is hit and miss.
Might try swapping the gear selection switch at the transmission end of the cable.

It cannot be, as the Parking linkage should work with no battery and car off I believe. So maybe first fix this issue as it is possible it's what gives you the most problems.

adjusted neutral safety switch assembly, adjusted cable. took for a test drive got about 100 yards and tranny went away, no foward, no reverse, no park. turn off key, and immediately restart and park is restored, reverse works, and drive works for about for a while. part shown by FirstV70volvo is described by volvo as starter inhibiter switch (previously described as neutral safety switch) but i believe it also functions as a gear shifter position sensor due to all of the additional contacts in it.
