Did you see the immobilizer start prevented error?imaV70Rdriver wrote: ↑21 Jan 2025, 13:52 A new antenna ring might be worth a try. I bought part No.8621509 last Feb from FCP for $70. It solved my very troublesome intermittent no start issue. BTW, the price has gone way up!
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 90-8621509 $209.69
It's much cheaper here...and is cheap enough to take-a-chance.
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/ ... 621509-VOL $63.75
or...
https://www.ipdusa.com/products/13854/4 ... hdY1gxZP-Z $264.95
I thought it was a starter issue, and installed a new starter motor for no reason. It was the antenna ring that caused my woes.

vtl, indeed I did. It didn't say "Immobilizer" though. Just "start prevented, try again", or something similar.

@jonesg,
Just to clarify...""start prevented" is the immobolizer, nothing else gives that mssg."
Is the "antenna ring" different from the "immobilizer"?

Yes and no. The antenna ring is just a code reader. It reads the code from the transponder chip in your key. The immobilizer then compares that with what it has and if they compare, then the car will start. If not you get the message you are getting.
2 things can go wrong:
1) Antenna ring - They can crack with age internally so not giving a complete scanning surface. Also the connector and cable can become oxidised/corroded. Cleaning the 2 sides of the connection even by just separating and reconnecting a few times can fix it, or spray with electrical contact cleaner and retry if no cracks are found. This is NOT a 100% sure test but can be the issue.
2) The transponder chip in the key fails. We have had 2 of these fail on us over the years. You can replace the chip with Ali-Baba ships and a bit of work splitting the case and fitting the new chip. It then has to be reprogrammed by Volvo. Problem we had is to do this they needed the barcode that comes with a new key to allow them to unlock the program. So we had to buy a new fob to get this. There may now be a way around this that others may know.
Neil.

Thanks for that clarification Neil.
I’m glad my issue was solved by changing the antenna ring, and that I didn’t have to deal with the transponder chip in the keys, or the immobilizer itself. Tackling those issues seems daunting.

Car had a harder no start where it wore down the battery after cranking for 10 minutes about a weak ago in -10. Today it did it again at -1C. Got it started while it was being jumped by an SUV. Took it straight to my mechanic who believes it is the cam position sensor based on his years of experience and the symptoms i described. Car will have sensor changed in the morning which i will hope will end this saga. Car didnt even sit for more than 16 hours between the last time it was run. Car was driven far prior to it not starting today. Tried 2 separate PEM's today and neither changed the starting behavior. Had 412 KPA of pressure at position 2 with both PEM units. Indy said fuel pressure should be enough to start the car regardless.
If this does not work then ill add a ground strap as per VTL and then just change the starter to see if it reduces the EMI injection.

sounds like a logical approach.yanga001 wrote: ↑10 Feb 2025, 19:53 Continuing this post.

My 06 S60t5 recently had occasional longer starter cranking between start ups. Last Wednesday it would not start after three starting sessions. On the last starting session it gave the message, Immobilizer see manual. After looking at the manual and reading the key is not communicating with the car, I went on YouTube and some guy said.................Lock the car with the actual key........Unlock the car with two key turns..............Then insert the key and turn it to full ignition position and return to off........Five times.......on the sixth try, start it.
Boom, it fired right up. Its been running ever since. My car only has a Valet key and I will get a Volvo fob soon.
I took mine over to my local Volvo guys yesterday to see if they can find the actual fault. I'll post back after they get a chance to look at it.

My local shop called back and pulled a code for the immobilizer and the crank sensor. They suggested an antenna for the key ring assy and asked me if I also wanted to go with a crank sensor. I said put both in. I'll post back on how the repair went down the road.
