the following facts may help you put an 850 together faster:
1)the alternator mounting bolt next to the block screws into the bolt in the cover with the idler pulley.
2)above this, the other long mounting bolt of the idler pulley piece screws into the bolt on the triangular piece that goes on the back of the PS pump.
3.)one bolt hole on front metal piece overlaps the triangular piece.
4.)removing plastic box around computer increases workspace substantially.
5.)a small piece of newspaper in the end of 12mm socket increases the hold on bolts installed through hole in PS pulley

I can't figure out how to get the bottom alternator bolt out (engine side). I've got a T5 if that makes any difference.

I replaced my alternator today and just had a couple of comments to add:
lewismug wrote:I am in the process of replacing mine on my 99 S70 n/a for the second time. It is fairly simple, (maybe an hour for removal and an hour for installation) but here are the steps I took:

1: Disconnect positive battery cable. Disconnect wires from alternator.
I wasn't able to reach anything on the back of the alternator until I was almost ready to remove it.
lewismug wrote: 2: Loosen and remove the serpentine belt from the alternator.

3: Remove the four bolts which hold the power steering pump in place. All four are 12mm.
Took me a little while to realize that there were holes/gaps in the pulley wheel on the front of the power steering pump which you could use to remove the bolts. Man, I stared at that for an embarrassingly long time.
lewismug wrote: 4: raise coolant overflow resivoir/power steering resivoir and power steering pump and lay on top of engine.

5: Disconnect upper radiator hose from engine.
I forgot to disconnect this hose and, I guess I managed to do okay.

7: Remove top alternator bolt 12mm (close to alternator pulley).

8: Remove both of the top bolts from the air conditioning compressor 12mm.

9: Remove the splash guard under the front bumper. One bolt on each side both are 10mm.

10: Loosen both bottom bolts from air conditioning compressor.
I originally forgot this step too. Don't its necessary to loosen up the compressor.

Thanks for the steps! They were a lot of help.
