If one's not living in a horribly cold country, jamming the airbox's hot air intake permanently shut is also a good way to ensure that the engine always get the good cold air. This is a significant performance trick that's free to do. IMO, on a lot of these old cars, the airbox thermo is dead and the intake tends to suck in a lot of warm air as well.
Changing to semi-synthetic also makes a difference in how well the engine revs in my experience.
The simple ram air intake mod by the gentleman from Queensland AUS, featured on this forum is also something worthwhile to try. It will help the throttle open up faster on acceleration. Of course it's good only if you're not living in a very wet part of the world.
Also, if the distributor cap and rotor are old, change them. Change the spark plugs if tired as well. Updating these electrical bits can make a big performance difference.
