The S40 was a joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi. I'm not sure who contributed the powerplant - Consumers indicate the 2000 model came with a 1.9 liter turbo four - not sure if that's a Volvo motor or Mitsu.

I cast another vote for a Honda or Toyota - preferably a four cylinder considering gasoline prices.
