Hi MadeInJapan,

you are so right, frustration is certainly rising after performing work, hoping to fix the problems to pass the emissions test (I've got all the details posted here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 74#p258752).

I failed to do the driving routine twice to reset the ECU and the values during e-test were bad. Do you know how I can tell without a scanner, whether or not the ECU was properly reset/reprogrammed? Also, my values got worse after performing the work that I was hoping would fix the issue. Is there a chance that the emissions values can drop drastically after reprogramming (with the driving) the ECU properly?
New to Volvo, already liking it. Hoping to keep it in good shape, not like the previous Benz 190e

Repairs so far: tie rods, outer CV Boot, air control flap, control rod, ABS module, various seals, motor mount

MadeInJapan's procedure just worked for me on my '98 S70. Went through it twice yesterday after fixing an EVAP
CEL issue a week earlier. After the second drive some hours after the first, the 6 INComplete readiness codes
were all OK/complete. Just wanted to chime in for folks that have seen this list of steps to try, and another much
longer list.

Note that the 6/5/4 minutes of driving at X RPM does not need to be uninterrupted -- it just need to be a
cumulative total of that many minutes. In my lower RPM drives I had to slow down and then reaccelerate to get
back into RPM range some more, and on the higher RPM runs I'm sure I got outside the range a few times.
I also idled 30+ seconds longer than proscribed just to make sure I didn't mess up the drive cycle run.

Many thanks from 8 years down the road!

1. Start the engine and accelerate to approximately 1500-2000 rpm.
2. Drive for 6 minutes at 1500-2000 rpm.
3. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 70 seconds.
4. Accelerate to at least 45mph and drive for 5 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm.
5. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 60 seconds.
6. Accelerate to at least 45 mph and drive for 4 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm.
7. Stop the vehicle and remain at idle in drive for 60 seconds.
8. Park the vehicle and turn off the engine.

This procedure must be performed TWICE from a cold start to set the readiness codes.

I might have missed it, but which OBD parameters are reset that can be seen on a handheld scanner such as the Carsoft i906?

Most scanners will report I/M readiness but the actual data available really vary according to the scanner and software.

You can generally tell by price point - if its a >$100 scanner, you can read most everything and usually plot and save it, too.

I have the one I referenced in my post actually, it's very nice and does seem to show a lot of things. Some of the parameters I'm seeing show "INC", presumably this means "INCOMPLETE". If so, wondering which ones the state machines are checking in particular, or perhaps it checks for any of them being INC? Just don't want to waste time going in for another check and failing, so would like to check parameters first with scanner. Great product BTW.

If they dont apply the show as N/A

Inc or not ready means the drive cycle hasn't completed yet

I think MA follows the EPA guideline of up to 2 monitors allowed to be NOT READY

Adding to this thread on readiness

Two conditions to avoid when trying to get monitors ready

Ac must be turned off

Do not exceed 60 mph.

These will both cancel readiness cycles
