Pull the glove box and locate the dark grey box to the right. There are several numbers on it- the one you want is in the lower left corner of the unit, White letters on a dark grey background, preceded with Model / FCC XXXXXX- the XX being the code. My code is a combination of letters and numbers. The other is all letters, IIRC, and both codes begin with CWT.
Both types are on ebay, used, new and new substitute. ONLY buy the one that has your code. the combination type will be one digit away from the receiver, ending in 3.
PS- and thanks to this board for the info:
Key should be turned from off position to position II 5 times within 10 seconds on an 850 and then push any button. You should see the red light in the center of the dash light up or blink (or something). Car doors should all be closed...not locked. At least this is my understanding of the process. After you push a button on the first one, you have about 5 seconds to push a button on the second one and then a third remote. You have to "reprogram" all at the same time. If you don't then the original one (that worked before you started the programming sequence) won't work anymore. Actually, this is because you're programming the car to the remotes. You can do up to 3 remotes for our cars.

All great information. Thanks for posting...for those who own a 70 series ('98 and newer), you do have to have the key FOB programmed by the dealer- wish it was as simple with 850's whose owners can do it themselves.

Well, curiosity got the better of me.JRL wrote:I've told you this before but you keep insisting, your dealer(s) are WRONG. There are different remotes. A 98 remote will NOT work on a 99, etc, there are several different PN's, they MUST match.BEJinFbk wrote:What are these "Numbers" that you and JRL keep bringing up?MadeInJapan wrote:Mine is the same one with the same number. There were only a few of these (looks identical) but with different numbers, so make sure yours matches (one off) the receiver like I said before.
I've talked to several dealers over the years about the"98-"00
keyless entry remotes and the answer is always 9166200.
The only other number is the FCC part#.
If THAT varied and made some significant difference,
why wouldn't Volvo use a different P/N ?.
There is a code somewhere on them
I made some more calls and did some further digging into this.
Several dealers, (including Berwyn Keystone ), eEuroparts, lots of
eBay posts, internet remote dealers and a former Volvo master tech
all indicate that any '98-'00 70 series with an alarm uses the 9166200.
So far, you're the only person with contrary information.
If you would please provide some details and explain what
you mean by "matching the numbers", that would be helpful.
As far as I can tell, the 9166200 transmitter with an FCC# of HYQ1512J
transmits a signal that can be learned by any '98-'00 70 series car with an alarm.
A dealer level interface is required to put the cars receiver in "learn" mode.
Beyond that, I'm open to further information.
Please advise. Thanks!

to start, here is ebay for remotes for your V70:
http://shop.ebay.com/items/_W0QQ_nkwZ19 ... R40QQ_mdoZ
And here are the instructions. I followed this with my 1994 850, and it worked fine. But in my case, the dash LED did not blink during programming and I had to get out of the car with the keys out of the ignition to see if the remote was programmed...
REPROGRAMMING TRANSMITTERS
Both transmitter key codes are preprogrammed in the receiver module when the car is supplied, but can be reprogrammed if necessary, e.g. if a new transmitter is used.
When reprogramming the receiver, it is important to enter each unique key code. The receiver's memory can hold up to three transmitter codes.
Before starting reprogramming, check that the remote control transmitter concerned uses the same frequency as the receiver.
The receiver module is marked with a FCC code- this is what you need.
The transmitter has a P/N engraved on the underside.
Note: New frequencies may be introduced later.

A (9148647) 9148646
C (9128710) 9128709
H (9128928) 9128927
The procedure for reprogramming the receiver module is as follows:
Turn the ignition key to position II five times in 10 seconds and leave the ignition on after the fifth time. Make sure you turn the key all the way off each time.
Within 30 seconds, press either the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the transmitter once.
All transmitters must be reprogrammed within 30 seconds.
Switch ignition off.
Check that each transmitter is working.
Note: If neither the LOCK or UNLOCK button is pressed within 30 seconds, no reprogramming will take place and the receiver module will retain the previous key codes.

but I'm trying to nail down whether or not the '98, '99 and '00's with alarms all use the same remote.
Anyone?

Apparently, yes, but they would need to be programmed by the dealer...the '98 is easier for them and costs less than the '99's and '00's.BEJinFbk wrote:I'm trying to nail down whether or not the '98, '99 and '00's with alarms all use the same remote.

Cool...That's the way it's looking to me, too.
It just seems that there's been some confusion on the subject
and I wanted to be sure that I had my facts straight.
Now, If I could just afford the software to do my own programming...

Each car has a PIN number too...the dealer can get it from your VIN#, apparently. They use this with the '98 in order to program the car to the FOB(s)...not sure about the '99 and '00 models.

The '99s and '00s are "networked cars" and require a "Remote Key Application" software download (p/n 9438431) $25.71 for the software, 1 hour labor. And yes, it takes about 45 minutes to actually do the procedure.MadeInJapan wrote:Each car has a PIN number too...the dealer can get it from your VIN#, apparently.
