Hello everyone, this is my first post here, and I am happy to be here. I recently purchased a used 98 V70 T5 wagon (Love it!!) I was given a keyless remote that does not work, but was told that I can get it reprogrammed at the dealer. Went to the dealer and was told that it was not the correct remote for the car, and that a new one would cost $250. which I would rather not pay. Can anyone out there who owns a 98 V70 please post a picture of what their remote looks like, and what numbers are on the back.
Thanks for any help I can get!

Welcome to MVS.
Actually the remote duplication is not as simple as just buying one that looks right. There is a receiving unit under your glove box/dash on the passenger's side- a black box and it has a set of numbers on it. The sending unit (your key FOB) has to match this- actually it's one digit less. So, even if I took a picture of my key FOB and posted it up, there is no guarantee that it will work. Now, the good news: Once you get the part number of the receiver, you can buy a use key FOB on eBay and the dealer can program it. I paid about $30 for the dealer to program the one I got on eBay for about $30. Just a note- I wouldn't tell them where you got it- they might not be so nice. Instead, I would just tell them that it quit working and you hoped that by them programming it, it would work again.
Oh, one more thing...S/V/C/XC70's all use the same remote entry system for '98 so if you get the number for the FOB you can search for it for any of these cars.

Mine is the same one with the same number. There were only a few of these (looks identical) but with different numbers, so make sure yours matches (one off) the receiver like I said before.

What are these "Numbers" that you and JRL keep bringing up?MadeInJapan wrote:Mine is the same one with the same number. There were only a few of these (looks identical) but with different numbers, so make sure yours matches (one off) the receiver like I said before.
I've talked to several dealers over the years about the"98-"00
keyless entry remotes and the answer is always 9166200.
The only other number is the FCC part#.
If THAT varied and made some significant difference,
why wouldn't Volvo use a different P/N ?.

I wasn't sure after reading your last entry so I went and searched one of Ozark Lee's old posts...here is what he said:
"FCC number CWT5654R number on it (receiver just to the right and under the glove box) and its matching transmitter is the FCC number CWT5653T," so, you are right- it's not the actual model number of the FOB but the FCC number that has to match up. I hope that this also helps the original poster.
Just to add: The above FCC numbers are just one set. They can differ, so don't go with the actual number I posted as an example above. For instance, the FCC number (ID) on my key FOB is HYQ1512J, so I assume that if I were to look under and to the right of my glove box, I would find a black box, approximately 3"x5" and 1.5" thick with HYQ1513x (not sure of the last letter) on it.
EDIT: I just looked on eBay and it appears that all of the key FOBs of this design (and part #9166200) have the same FCC ID. If this is indeed the same one that the original poster as, my speculation is that the dealer lied to you about not being able to program it and that you have the "wrong kind." This is not unusual. After all, they would like for you to buy one of theirs and charge you more $$ for it and its programming. I would find another dealer who is more honest if this is the case.

I've told you this before but you keep insisting, your dealer(s) are WRONG. There are different remotes. A 98 remote will NOT work on a 99, etc, there are several different PN's, they MUST match.BEJinFbk wrote:What are these "Numbers" that you and JRL keep bringing up?MadeInJapan wrote:Mine is the same one with the same number. Jim, I am quite aware of this and have not ignored what you've "insisted on" early....this is for a '98 remote and not a '99. If the original poster will post back, we'll know if the numbers are the same or not. Certainly there are dishonest dealers out there trying to make a buck....this time, it might involve one of those- but maybe not.

Thank you everyone for your responses. This is a photo of the remote I was given when I bought the car, and I am sure it is not the correct one, as the dealer has said, and also by the fact that the #s on the back are not even close to the #s posted. I have found a couple of remotes on ebay that look like the one in the photo posted by BEJinFbk. I think I am going to take my chances and get one of the ebay remotes. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes, that's not the one....you're doing exactly what I did when I bought my S70, but the one I got was a second one (I already had one) so I had the numbers to go by....but for your '98 Volvo, it appears that the remotes all have the same FCC number so I'd say it's a good gamble. Keep us posted how it goes.
