The BCM (Brake Control Module) and ABS modules are one and the same on this car, my apologies for jumping from one term to the other without explanation. I looked at the dealer's worksheet while going through fault tracing in VIDA and determined they have come up with the correct diagnosis--for the BCM at least; I'm unconvinced that the SAS needs replacement despite VIDA saying so (on the basis of the CEM-1A5E code).

Thanks. That's a relief. I thought I was heading on a new and uncharted path with yet another module.

Hi,

I know this was posted ages ago but I have exactly the same problem. Did you ever get a resolution?

Thanks
Andrew

Yes. I had the ABS module rebuilt and reinstalled and I still had the problem. I had to have the steering angle sensor replaced and that fixed everything. To be honest as you can see above I had been told the diagnostics showed both needed replacing and the advice from this forum was to do the ABS first because there was doubt the SAS would be gone as well. It's been two years and everything is working. Then I got the noise in the transmission. One mechanic says it's a transmission pump that is not serviceable. $3500 to $7000 for a rebuilt or new transmission. Mr. Transmission says they think it may be the turbo booster. So now I'm into my next mystery.

My only advice would be to have a Volvo shop do the work. A non Volvo shop can't do all the electronic code resets and programming. All told it cost around $2000. Not good at 84,000 kM.

Hi dwills. Thanks for the response. I'm guessing that my problem is the ABS unit (or BCM as I think they are one and the same on my 2005).

Sorry to hear about your transmission. Good luck with it. These cars are a real pain when things go wrong.

My dealer ran a diagnostic because I had a "Brake Failure" message and I was told it was my ABS and I needed a new BCM. The part itself was quoted at $1300 not including labor. Millsa99- did you have this replaced? Dwills was told the same thing and it ended up being his steering angle sensor due to a defective seal. I would prefer the latter repair as it costs much less. Please let me know if you had the BCM replaced and what your experience has been. Thanks!

my transmission shop (Marshall's transmission in Knoxville, Tn.) was able to load the codes after the rebuild. so far so good. second transmission so I let them try instead of the dealer. $2500 with oil cooler installed as extra protection.

ok, I am looking at this post and just posted the same issue. They(import car shop) wants to change the ABS module! Volvo dealer wants to pend 2-3 hours looking at the wiring? When the codes were pulled i see no issue with the SAS. There are other communication codes.
CEM-1a5f communication with BCM
some seat heater no communication DTC not found
position lamp DTC found not active
Aentana light ring signal missingDTC not found active
Break pedel sensor signal missing DTC is found active
Seat rear edge motor signal missing DTC is not found active

VERY CONFUSED!!!!!

Where is the ABS located

My dealer wanted $1800 to replace the BCM. I'm going to have XeMODeX rebuild mine. Forgive my ignorance but is there any documentation available that shows where the BCM is located and how to remove it? I'm a pretty handy mechanic but just need some direction.
