If it is a solenoid, they are about $100 apiece from FCP Groton. There are 3 or 4 of them (if I recall correctly 3, 1-2, 3-4 and torque converter lock-up (overdrive) under the black cover at the left front of the transmission. There is no "CHIP" in the transmission.

jsacks, you need to have your car towed from the Volvo dealership to your indie jag/fiat shop or to your local transmission repair franchise for a second opinion. even if you have to eat the cost of the tow, you may come out ahead by thousands of dollars.

Thanks to all for the advice.
Does anybody here have any opinions about AAMCO as an alternative? I've read a lot of horror stories online about them and yet they seem to be everywhere. So are they doing something right or is it just an illusion?

My experience with AAMCO and Cottman Transmission have both been a total nightmare. When you hit the door they insist on a total rebuild with cheap parts that usually make it about 10 miles beyond the warranty. I took my old Jeep into Cottman for an estimate and when I came back to find out it was a $2000.00 rebuild and they already had the transmission out of the car and it was pieces in a box - I'm not even sure that they were my pieces. AAMCO was just as bad but at least all they had done was drop the pan and I told them to put it back and I drove the car another 35 k miles with the harsh shifting before I sold it cheap.
In your case I would just get an indy shop to fix the underlying problem and leave the rest of it alone. You either need a solenoid (cheap) or a valve body (not as cheap but much cheaper than a transmission rebuild). Your code showed a hydraulic problem but it could be a solenoid problem that shows as a hydraulic problem.

Some are good and some are bad, like any shop you need to ask some of the locals about your specific transmission shop.JSACKS wrote:Thanks to all for the advice.
