S80 1999 Turbo What to repair from a trouble code P1618

I'm in a similar situation, so I hope it's okay that I tag onto this thread as perhaps we can help each other.
I've had a 99 S80 T6 for a couple years now. The car has about 130k miles on it and last month the GM transmission gave out. And by gave out, I mean none of the gears engaged. Volvo wanted $4500 to put in a rebuilt tranny so I took the car to a tranny shop recommended to me by a local Swedish car specialist.
It turns out a $20 thrust bearing exploded taking out a lot of parts necessitating a complete overhaul. On a good note, it looks like the 4th gear clutch hub was about to fail anyway (splines nearly worn out).
So about $2700 later, the car is back together and in automatic mode it shifts and works just like it should. When you change over to the manual mode and try to shift it into 4th gear, it totally craps itself.
First, it would indicate a 4th gear shift on the dash, but stay in 3rd gear. Later, this developed into a full blow catastrophe where shifting into 4th would cause the car to go into limp home mode by staying in 3rd gear at all times and throwing two engine codes. One was P1618 and the second is something about solenoid A. If you reset the codes and leave the shifter in Auto, it works just fine again.
I, of course, promptly took the car back to the tranny shop and they are looking into the problem right now. They checked the solenoid in question for proper electrical readings and it checked out fine.
I'm thinking they either hooked something up wrong, or this issue is a oddly coincidental.
Any thoughts? I suggested the shop try to obtain a scanner capable of reading the TCM codes but they can't borrow one and aren't going to buy one any time soon.
I hate to say this, but I need to sell the car real soon as we're in the process of buying a house and it's one more car than we need right now.

Thanks for the link. I decided to stop by the shop this morning, and the short story is that they replaced the Volvo valve body with a GM sourced one back when they did the original rebuild because of a shifting problem. Now that this new problem has come up, they tore it apart and looked more closely. It turns out the Volvo valve body is slightly different so now they are planning to receive a used Volvo valve body tomorrow.
I plan to stop by again on Friday to see the result. Who knows what will happen after that.
