S60 AM radio problems!
Re: S60 AM radio problems!
Just got the car back -- 4 days later -- yes, it's fixed -- can't seem to find out what they exactly fixed - but it's fixed... the static is gone...

I took my 2006 S-60 in for it's first servicing...and one of the many issues with the car is the AM radio! They said that since the car is new, the brass strip thingy I read about here is already there. They are totally indifferent to the fact that I cannot listen to the am radio when I drive. One weird note that may help others: I noticed that when the signal starts to go bad, if I move the driver's seat forward/back level, then the radio will often start to "come in" better. So, i drive around, moving my seat forward and back constantly, trying to listen to Clark Howard on the radio. sheesh. I had an S-60 for 4 years before I got this one--NO PROBLEM with the radio at all. The brand new S-60 loaner they gave me to drive while baby was in the shop? NO PROBLEM with the radio. Annoying! They seem annoyed with me for even complaining about it. They acted like they'd never heard of this before.
Cindy: When I was having problems with mine, a auto-nut friend of mine suggested I give up on Volvo service and take it to an auto stereo shop - he said they have a filter they can install that will solve the problem you are having... I was going to do just that but somehow Volvo fixed my problem... good luck.

A quick question... where exactly is the am signal amplifier located? And I believe the object of the brass strip repair is to create a more solid connection between the antenna connector and the amp (or at least that is what the service bulletin says). Since the shop labor for an S60 is only .3 hours I assume this thing must be in an easy place to access...
Thanks for any help. I'm a brand-new 2003 S60 owner. Just picked it up last Saturday.

The amplifier is located in the left rear C pillar. I just had the dealer fix mine and the total cost was $54. Time listed on work order was 1/2 hour. I read somewhere recently it was in the C pillar and was going to pull the plastic trim off the inside to look but was frightened off by the "air curtain" sign on the cover. I could imagine me yanking and twisting with my face a foot away and KAPOWIE!Roundy wrote:A quick question... where exactly is the am signal amplifier located? Good day, steves wrote:Just an update on my AM radio situation if anyone cares....
I took it to the dealer and they fixed it, the work order states:
"Installed Brass strip to help improve reception as per tech note 39-35".
Not sure what tech note 39-35 states, but evidently this is a known issue by Volvo and they have a "fix" for it. I will let you know if I have any further issues with it.
Steve
Has anybody else had the AM reception problem solved?
If so, what was the work order that was done. That is, if it was covered under warranty. My service advisor had suggested the Brass Strip remedy at a cost plus labour. I doubt they would replace the whole radio for an AM radio issue. Should it be covered under the warranty?
Thanks.

Known problem and known fix.
There is this brass strip that attches (in line) with the antenna.
Easy to do, best to have the dealer show you or have them do it
(Personally have never done it but I know it's a 10 minute fix)

Thanks Steve for the info. My car goes in next week for the fix and it even is covered under warrenty.
if worse comes to worse, I will attempt to repair as per Tech-Net Note 39-35 (Re: Service Bulletin 39-0018 / 39-0025).
However, just presenting these documents will they / should they do the installation under the extended warranty (between 4th and 5th year) program?

I may be wrong but a Service bulletin does not necessarily mean that there's a recall. You may get lucky but I would be prepared to pay if I were you. A S.B. to me means that they've figured out a fix for a known problem.

Hi there MIJ,
You would think that if there is a Labour Op (99042-2) associated with the SB, that the service dept would be willing to perform the operation without hesitation. Well it seem some people get lucky and some people have to pay for the part. It should be a binary question, is it under warranty?
