I was trying to adjust the two nuts (sorry, not bolts) on the cable behind the rear ash tray. The cable runs through to the other side of a metal partition to where it connects to the handbrake ratcheting system. Well, there is a round piece of metal that sits against the partition and it is quite loose, it only snugs up with 4 or 5 clicks of the brake. So, I was trying to adjust the nut that was closest to the handle on the side with the two adjusting nuts.

Right place but possibly something in there has come loose.

The attachment shows what should be there and how it works. It sounds as if the locking sleeve isn't coming back into place after you do the adjustment. If so the thing will unscrew itself.

Thanks for the Haynes scans :)
I was using mine when I was trying to adjust this thing but it never occurred to me that I never had to push any locking sleeve. In fact, when I took the rear ash tray off, it looked like figure 7.2 there was no sleeve there. Did some vehicles not ship with this sleeve, or is it just plain missing?

Thanks
Darrell

If you look closely at 7.2 you will see that the sleeve is there but the spring has been compressed. All of my books give the same instruction as Haynes, including one which is specifically for the US models. Has the sleeve on yours been pushed forward and jammed?
