I have to agree with the second poster on this one. As soon as you heard that ticking sound, you should have shut the car off and coasted to the side of the road. You would have been able to pop the hood and saw the coolant was gone. You would not be in the position you are in now with a blown motor.

Anyway, If the rest of the car is in prefect shape (Shocks, brakes, trans, etc...) then swapping in a used motor would be the way to go. Just make sure you have all the seals replaced before you have it dropped in.

$6k+ plus labor, with all the work you need 10k is about your number.

Those engines are NOT new, rather re-manufactured.

I never deal with them so you have to find out yourself. My guess is still $$$.

The dealership might replace my engine with a factory new one. Any idea what a new 2000 V70 engine would cost?? I can't find it online.

Thanks again for all of your advice, I will work to implement the suggestions. AutoTrader shows one used V70 manual in the entire USA right now, and overpriced at that. I'm really considering fixing up the brick!
Check your www.craigslist.org in your locale for an engine. I picked up an entire 95 850 with front end damage for $300 and did the engine swap myself.

Gees,
Call Erie
www.erievovo.com
CALL THEM, do not email them. (Good on the phone, bad on email).
Ask for Jack, tell them Jim from Teppers Auto Sales said to call.
Used engines sell from between $600 and $1000 and are GUARANTEED FOR LIFE from them.
A few years ago I bought from them a non turbo 98 motor with 28K on it for a grand!
Wonderful motor, it was better than the rest of the car
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Thanks for all of the great ideas, links and and help. This is really encouraging me to swap in a used motor and fix the clutch while I'm at it. My current plan is: Have the car towed home, wait for a supplier to get a motor, then search for someone to install it.

The dealership won't install a used motor. confused_al was right, they'd install one that they provided and do the clutch for $11k+. That's not a reasonable option, since the lovely motor would outlive the other mechanical, electrical and body parts. $7k buys the one V70 manual on AutoTrader.

I just have to shake/accept the thought that I murdered the car. I forced it drive out of panic and unclear thinking, so it did. Perhaps a testament to the engine that it survived 20 minutes of torture. An expensive lesson learned.

On the subject of replacing accessory belts, can somebody comment on when/how often they should be replaced? Also, what is the best brand?
