IMHO - I would use a silcone type spray that dries as opposed to WD 40 (which, by the way, IS a great product) stays oily and can attract dust and dirt thus causing more complications.

The key is out right now. Do you suggest I spray inside the key hole. You think it will work? The key is just not going to back to 0. I dont know why it comes after I play with it for a few minutes. That is why I do not want to pay 500 for it. I paid a 100 dollars just to have it looked at today. I really do not want to pay anymore for it.

Do you think I should spray the key then put it the ignition? or just spray inside the ignition. I really hope this works

If you want to be conservative, spray the key first and try it. If that doesn't help, spray into the keyhole, then try it.shelly4278 wrote:Do you think I should spray the key then put it the ignition? or just spray inside the ignition. I really hope this works

I took my car to a garage today. I asked them about the WD 4o and they told me again not to put it there. The funny thing is the key is not sticking that bad anymore. Tonight I went out and the key came right out.
I had this happen to my '06 S40 yesterday without any warning. I went to shut the car off and the key would not rotate completely to "0" so the key would release. After attempting to remove the key unsuccessfully, I left the key in the car and disconnected the battery to prevent any drain on it. I searched this forum for an answer today and after reading a couple of threads related to my problem, I decided to follow the suggestions and sprayed some silicone lubricant into the area around the key. I let it set for about 30 minutes. When I reconnected the battery, I was able to turn the key all the way to "0" and was able to remove the key.
Many thanks to this forum.

I'm late to this post but I'm comfused as to what you are doing? There is no "cylinder" like I think some posters on here are imagining. The keys for these cars are just a plastic tip on the remote that you insert in the SCU or "starter control unit" to start the car. There is NO metal involved here, lubricant will not repair your problem, it will only make it worse, if possible. We sell the SCU's like crazy, it is for sure a problem on the newer S40/V50. You can remove the SCU from the car and take it apart, you can try to repair it, but it is not likely to work. The part number is 31300586 which we sell for $142.51 and keep 8 in stock. $500 is way steep for the repair, find out how much they are charging for the part. That sounds very steep.
