Great. Government making things difficult again. I wonder if the new stuff is going to be mixable with the r134, and the remnants of r12 in some of the older cars still on the road.

I remember when r134 came out. Repair shops were gouging people for full r12 evacuations, all kinds of pricey conversions kits, some of the real thieves even changed compressors. For my '90 Thunderbird, all I did was change the low pressure connector with a plastic fitting and dumped the newer stuff in with the old. It worked fine. If I remember right. The chemical manufacturers changed the collar on the new cans so the r12 recharge hose kits wouldn't fit. Forcing the consumer to pay for a conversion, or figure something out on their own.

Gotta add something. Wouldn't it be a great country if the government actually worked for the people, instead of perpetuating their own self importance.....Meet the new boss.....Same as the old boss.

Does Dupont have another patent expiring?
There are new patents involved. Honeywell and DuPont are teaming up on this one.
How much is the test these days?
AFAIK that has not been set up yet. I'm not a Wrench so I don't know.

Nope. The two are not mixable. No one really knows the long term real world effects of mixing the two refrigerants together. The issue will be in oil compatibility with the refrigerant. We don't want to be forming any acids that eat seals, as an example. That is why the R-12 conversion to 134-a became an opportunity to gouge folks. The change meant that a system had to replace o-rings and the oil in the system. Then charge with 134-a and move on. Simple to me but not so simple to others. Some were taken for a ride.

r12 and r134 Were NOT mixable? Tell that to my car. I got another 2 or 3 seasons out it with the two mixed. The A/C system out lived the car.

Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. The Government is not out to gouge you they are basically being responsible with known harmful elements. We must continue to improve as a species and that means looking forward. It does not mean stagnating on 100 hundred year old technology.(internal combustion engine). I know we are running cars in the 50 mpg range and really there is no excuse for others to not follow suit. I know the opposite view as well. We are starting with a really good product our Volvos. And the challenge of keeping them in great shape gets toughe r as years go by. Adapting to these challenges takes effort. There usually is a good reason for these changes. Govt only goes wrong when they pass laws keeping us from tying our giraffes to the traffic light posts. And lets not forget the law against wearing a chicken on your head while entering a financial institute. Yeah those laws!

...And to add to the thread being that it was kicked to the top again. Two and a half years later from my original post, my A/C is still holding a full charge.

The Jeep I picked up only gets max 12 mpg city driving. Looks like I'm keeping the Volvo for the daily driver.
