That explains it so much better! It is exactly as you have shown and explains why I could not see the unit.

I had the trans oil dumped and replaced, didn't flush it because of all the warnings I read on here about doing a flush. Didn't seem to make a difference. The car has 239k miles on it, if the transmission is gone, I will not cry (my wallet may weep), but it has lived a full life.

Thank you for the diagram, that was really nice of you to post, I'm a highly visual person.

Yea, if the trans is shot, but the rest of the car is not bad, I'd say you got a pretty good deal for $500!

How do I determine what the Volvo Part Number is for my transmission? I am looking at some now, but need the Volvo Part Number to verify it is the correct one.

Should be 1208865, AW 50-42 LE AWD.

EDIT: Whoops, there are several numbers apparently. I don't know what the difference is. Usually the first number is the common part, BUT sometimes they are not.
