Re: Rolling in Park
You know what, that seems incredibly likely. It would explain the strange sound and everything. Follow that lead for now. lol I wish I had thought of that. lol

On the other hand, a loose drive shaft would make it impossible to drive the car. A normal differential, the kind we have in our Volvo's, sends power to the wheel with the least resistance, that's why we spin tires. So, if you had a loose half shaft, then all the power would be sent to that side and the car would feel like it's in neutral.
EDIT: Oh....nvm...it's AWD. Ignore my post.

Ok, so thanks for the link to this thread polksa..
I'm now really worried that something worse than just the PNP is messed up - if my tranmission is messed up I duno what I'm gonna do. Nor do I know how to go about checking that, or the 'driveshaft' idea, out.
I definitely don't feel safe driving the few kms up to volvo to pick up my rear brake hardware that has arrived. especially since I can't park. . . i'd have to bring someone to run in and get it? hah, not to mention - I feel like disaster is around the corner.
Should I just wait til the 4th or 5th when my new PNP should be here to install that and see if it corrects the error?
Thanks guys.
EDIT: To the OP, I don't mean to barge in on your thread. I'm having a very similar/exact problem.
My car rolls backwards in Park, with a 'click click click' which can be heard, and felt in the shift knob button as it rolls. It stared just yesterday after I was fiddling with the PNP. I had undone the nuts on the "bracket" that holds the shift cable to adjust it verrry slightly. The flashing lights then stopped, but the car won't Park now. Much worse, I feel.
Another quick question: If this, even temporarily, fixed the 'flashing arrow and selector lights' problem but caused the "rolling in Park" problem. Why are there no warning indicator lights for this new problem.

How bad would this be if the locking pin notches have been stripped off polksa. And by the transmission being misaligned do you mean something related to the PNP switch, or something worse, related directly to the transmission?polskamafia mjl wrote:The parking mechanism works by using a pin that locks into a toothed gear on the outside of the transmission. This explains it better -> http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic ... sion11.htm
I can think of only two things that would cause the car to roll in park. The first, either the locking pin or the notches have been stripped off, the second, the transmission is misaligned and the locking pin isn't being engaged fully.
Thanks for any help
(I should just make my signature "Thanks a lot guys!!!"
Hello cn90,cn90 wrote:Check the Selector Cable adjustment.
By adjustment, what do you mean?
The 'unbolting' of the shift selector cable to move it "forward or backward"? Or, is there an actual "adjustment" method that can be used to adjust the cable somehow that doesn't involve undoing those two nuts that hold it down?
Thank you.

It was just a theory at best, but on an AWD it would explain the strange noises from the right side of the car. As Polska said earlier, on a FWD car, the car just wouldn't go anywhere; both axles need to be connected to move the car.
Lambo, I think yours has something to do with the PNP switch/shifter cable position.

Got the wheel off and checked it out. Behold, a busted CV!
It seemed fine when it went back together after replacing the transmission, boot was ripped, so it got a new one, but given just a few miles, it's gone, gone, gone.
Looks like FCP Groton (thanks again!), has the axle assembly with inner and outer CVs for $7.999. Sounds like a deal to me!
