I guess my answer to the poll is no, and I hope I can keep it that way.

I've got a good bit of oil leaking in the viscinity of the turbo on my '98 S70. Could it be the oil return line or something more dire? I've also noticed that my turbo is a little louder recently and likes to really zoom after I park. Normal?

I concur with Alan J - a properly maintained turbo should outlast the rest of the car. Water cooled units have altered the old model, and it is no longer a situation where the question is not if the turbo will fail, but when the turbo will fail. I very recently had occasion to know what kind of shape mine is in; my '96 850 T-5 suffered a burned valve (FYI, cyl #3 exhaust) just shy of 175,000 miles halfway through a 200 mile trip. When the upper end was later disassembled I had the opportunity to check out the turbo and find it in pristine condition; i.e., smooth running, tight bearing movement. Since I've owned the car (~68,000 miles) I've run Castrol synthetic, which I change at more frequent than required intervals, and use Volvo (Mann) filters. To me, given the high-heat, high-speed conditions under which a turbo operates, this just makes good sense.

On a related note, while I was in turbo mode (so to speak), I shortened the rod on the wastegate actuator to increase the boost from the wimpy 4.5 psi factory setting (my '88 740T had 10.5 psi from the factory) so that it now approaches 10 psi (according to my IPD boost guage). The result has made me very happy.

The turbo has been leaking oil since I bought the car at 135k. It now has 191k. It is not the oil return line which is relatively cheap and easy fix. Mine runs through the whole induction system: intercooler and manifold. At some point I imagine it will seize up or something, so far I get good boost and performance. There are drips down the back of the engine and oil spots on the driveway.
If anyone is contemplating replacement I would suggest www.fcpgroton.com it wasn't in their parts list but call or email them; a rebuilt turbo runs about $900 w/ a $200 core charge. They are helpful and knowledgeable and have good prices on most anything you'll need.

My nominations for shops where you can have your current turbo rebuilt professionally. It shouldn't cost much more than $300. Remember to install a new turbo oil feed line.

And one other thing... For the price of a rebuilt, your existing turbo housing can be over-bored for a larger compressor wheel, such as -15G, -16G, -16T, or -17C.

Oh and if you would rather, these places sell brand new turbos, too.

welll i just got my 850 8 months maybe nad old people before didnt take care of it so im smoken hella bad on another forum they say its my turbo... os i think ima be gettin a new orused one dont really wanna bust 1800 for one
beating a honda is like doin your mom, anyone can do it...but who wants to brag

No, But I'm not entirely sure if my turbo gauge (on the dash) is reading correctly. If you are foot to the floor, what should the dial read??

(Excuse me for sounding like a dufus on thi, but I have little experiance with turbos. . . . .)

this is the first turbo car i have ever owned. it just doesnt have a lot of go. the turbo guage does not go very far in the white. is this norm. please help. car has 250000miles

Check your intercooler hoses to start off with for leaks and loose clamps. Then do the same thing with all your vacuum hoses. The elbows for the vacuum lines get mushy and leak-need replacing. If you never did any of this you definitely need it done.

2000 s70. no turbo problems so far.. 129000 miles and still smooth..
