Pretty sure thats a resounding no, as 1999 was the transition year to CANBUS. Its just a superior year, for superior owners.

abscate, thank you for your response. I am learning everyday among the veterans on this great site.

As such, I need further definition to understand how this works?
I do not have a volvo scan tool. This software vida is, I'm guessing of no use to me because of this. I purchased a new "Genuine claimed 9166200 keyless entry remote from Tasca Auto Parts on ebay at $90.00.
I have a 2000 v70 L5 base /SE. I already have a working key and remote entry control that is working and a security light that remains flashing when I lock the car with the remote.

I don't mean to carry on here about which I know very little about, but are there no other alternatives to the dealer? Thanks, Ray

I'm not an expert on this stuff but I'm pretty confident no one has escaped the dealership on the later cars..1999-on

Technically you can do it yourself but you need to pony up for a VIDA subscription. Although it is still listed I have heard that Volvo will no longer sell the 3 day subscription which cost $125.84 and that you must buy the 30 day subscription which is $737.51. The bootleg VIDA that comes with the DICE clones will not work for software loading and some of the DICE clones may not work for software downloading at all.

After you buy the subscription you then need to buy the software and that purchase needs to go through a dealer as I understand it but you may be able to set it up with a credit card (my dealer was of no help to me when I looked at buying a subscription). The last time I looked the software download for a remote was around $50.00 list price. My outstanding Volvo service department charges list price +40% for parts in addition to the labor.

The short answer is that it appears that you can get around the dealer but it will cost more than biting the bullet and taking it in to have your wallet adjusted by said dealership.

Whatever you do don't lose the package that the remote you bought came in. It has the code numbers that must be entered for the software download printed on a sticker. If the remote and the sticker get separated then the remote becomes a pretty keychain with no function.

Thank You Abscate and Lee, and for the detailed information you have given me. As you described it Lee, there is only one obvious choice and was wondering if those bullets come in different flavors
