Re: Oil Overfill During Oil Change

Post by SimLyons »

I've been buying most of my stuff from IPD over the years and when I lived in the Portland area I'd just go pick my order up and talk with the people there. It was a great experience. But when I recently got my PCV kit from them I tried to make sure it came with Volvo hoses (per Justin Blackwell's advice...thanks again Justin) They couldn't and wouldn't promise and would up with only genuine Volvo clamps. when I called back to "make it right", as they promised to do, they said it would take weeks. Anyway, I talked with a customer service person (I promised to not name!) and was told they aren't buying from Volvo any longer because of a 50% price increase to IPD. Not all parts, but most. So be sure of what you are ordering in the future. I'll be looking at the details to be sure of things I need/want to be genuine OE.

Addendum: I ended up buying my hoses for the PCV directly from a Volvo dealer in Portland. Got them overnight at a reasonable price, and they FIT!!

Maybe a dumb question; if you put too much oil in it, could oil end up in the intake manifold (?) through the PCV- system? And cause the engine hardship?

Just a quick update. I finally saved up the $$$ to get it to the mechanic down the street, to have him figure out what's wrong and to finish up the rest of the stuff (PCV & oil cooler lines, along w/ IPD's intake spacer). He was able to figure out why it was running so rough: when doing the tune-up kit my buddie and I routed the spark plug wire for plug #2 to #4 and vice versa. Thus rough idle and mis-fire. You got it: Face Palm.

He also found that the front brake hoses are dryrotted and cracking and that the ignition switch is faulty and is intermittently causing ABS light to come on and other warning lights also stay on. So those items got added to the list. I'll be picking it up on Thursday and I'll take a nice drive to see how it's running.

Gotta love the trials of getting our cars to Stage 0.

It's all part of the love/hate relationship with these cars. Glad you got it all taken care of!

Here is a suggestion for future work: don't do a bunch of things before you see how it runs. Do one thing at a time. When you do several things you can't tell which thing you worked on is causing the problem. If you had started it up after you replaced the plugs you would have known immediately where the problem lay.

On the positive side it sounds like you found a pretty good mechanic.
2011 XC70 T6 - current
2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.

Good point. I was thinking that I should've checked it before the oil change. After we started it up and we just assumed it was the fact we put too much oil in, when indeed it was just crossed wires. Lesson learned.

The good thing is that I live about a mile and a half from the mechanic and he's actually from Sweden and used to race. He only works on Volvos and Saabs. So he's got a good history and a depth of knowledge with these cars.
