Well one is 75 weight and the other is 75-80 weight.
I doubt there is an iota of performance difference between them in a MT.

I recently had my local independent do an engine swap and since the clutch was shot after 229,000 miles (although the pressure plate still had some friction material on it), I asked them to change clutch and the transmission oil just to be on the safe side.
This is not a maintenance item on my 1998 V70 and, in fact, Volvo does not recommend changing it at any interval as far as I could determine.
Nonetheless, I asked my guys to change it just for piece of mind.
The proper Volvo oil is stupid expensive.
Moreover, when my mechanic drained the old oil he said it looked fine and he would not have changed it on his own car.
Unless you have a powerful reason for changing it (like the original leaked out), I'd be very tempted to leave it alone.

I'm debating about doing a transmission oil change. My '99 S70 with 115k miles, shows no leaks, its manual transmission shifts fine - in other words, if not broken, don't fix, then the other side of the coin is the thought of having a 15+ year car (Im the original owner) and 115K miles with the same oil - dunno, but I'd say that spending ~$36 for two bottles of oil and about an hour of work beats the cost to repair or replace a transmission.E Showell wrote:I recently had my local independent do an engine swap and since the clutch was shot after 229,000 miles (although the pressure plate still had some friction material on it), I asked them to change clutch and the transmission oil just to be on the safe side.

Current: 1999 S70/manual transmission - from new, working on 115K miles
Former: 1985 740 GLE/manual transmission - from new to 250 miles!

I saw the old oil when it came out, although looks can be deceiving, it looked pristine. I replaced mine at 229. I'd say you've got another 115K miles to go before replacement if you're so inclined.

Exactly my experience Ed. I didn't use the expensive Volvo stuff, I used Mobil 1 synthetic.
No difference in shifting. I will update after winter and cold temps.

Hey guys, just wondering, but which Mobil 1 synthetic oil did you use? Did you use Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Oil? (I was going to use OEM, but I forgot to add it to my order and don't feel like putting yet another order in right now...) How did it all turn out? There's a Volvo dealer here in NYC, but it's far away in Long Island... Thanks!
