You should hear it start up in the morning once the car is put in Drive and driven a few hundred feet.
Now that you mention it... I used to hear it, or rather the infamous "ghostly moan" in the colder weather. I haven't heard it this year. It has even snowed twice in the last week, and I drove in the snow both times.

SAS Delete, pronto.

If it is a late model with an ETM, the cruise may become disabled when the check engine light is on (not 100% sure of this but may be a possibility
On my 1999 T5 some engine codes will definitely disable the cruise control. An ETS light or ABS fault will also do this.

Afternoon All,

I know this thread is a bit on the old side, but Matt, What if you build your own evap smoke machine fro cheap and tap into the evap system and smoke it out to see where the leak is?

That's normally what I do when I have a car come in with an evap leak. +

I remember one time a customer brought his 02' Oldsmobile Silhouette in for a P0445 "large leak detected" code and had brought it to several shops who replaced everything under the sun (i.e. vent valve, purge solenoid, vapor canister, etc...) to "fix" it but to no avail, the light remained on. Turned out that about 4 weeks earlier he just had a new fuel pump module put in the tank and when they tightened the lock ring down around the pump they crushed the o-ring. I hooked up the smoke machine and immediately found smoke coming out of the top of the tank where the pump went in, put in a new o-ring and it was night and day.

Thanks abscate. My cruise continues to be non-functional, but I don't do any long-distance driving.

Joe, thanks for the ideas. I put this P0422 on the "shelf" because it sometimes doesn't show for up to 2 months. Besides cruise, there are no symptoms. It's frustrating, but on a low level. I'm going to get after it again when the weather gets better.

I'll try a bunch of incense sticks first -- the (very) poor man's smoke machine. Then if nothing turns up, SAS delete.

Wow Matt,

Incense Sticks? That is an awesome idea! And, truly the (very) poor man's smoke machine.

I thought my 1 gallon empty milk jug and some clear rubber tubing was the poor man's way but I guess I was wrong...

...and to complicate things ..my cruise is now non-working with no MIL, ETC, nor ABS light/code present nor pending.

I will fix it since I use this car as my most comfortable long distance cruiser. Im still smarting from the DIY FAIL of not connecting the intercooler turbo hose and chasing that for three weeks.

Colorado and Washington now providing some legal alternative smoke sources for vacuum testing, btw.

On edit - I did find an excellent write up of the 02 sensor operation in the Volvo 850 DIY archives above
