Not shifting into 4th gear?

I was going to swap in the other unit today and get the flashing arrow to happen and check codes while the car is running with the
arrow flashing. As soon as I turn the car off and restart it the arrow is out but as soon as I come close to 4th gear the arrow with come back on and then go into limp home mode and will probably not rev past 3000rpm. With the abs unit in the car now it will rev past 3000 and the arrow will not flash but all the abs lights are on.

I also removed the PNP switch and cleaned the contacts and it did nothing which I figured that anyway. I don't see how the PNP switch will effect shifting anyway. Once I put the shifter in drive it stays and drive and that's all the PNP switch does. How does it control shift points when the cable doesn't move from it's drive position? I can see if I have a no start condition or the key doesn't come out of the ignition when the car is in park but controlling shift points by the PNP switch must be a volvo thing because no other vehicle that uses a PNP switch will have problems for the tranny to shift through gears with a defective PNP switch.

I just swapped in the abs unit that makes flashing arrow pop up, road tested with a scanner hooked up the flashing arrow hasen't come on. I will know when I go home on the highway if it come up when it should shift into 4th gear and doesn't. I will let the car run and scan it with the arrow flashing this time to see what code I can get. At least to narrow it down a little.

Who knows it might even shift into 4th now and work perfect. These volvo's seem to be wizards?? I guess driving an old car with high mileage once you start touching or unplugged thing it messes up something else. I'm only down to one dash light on(rear hatch) and all my clunks, squeaks, bangs, vibrations are now gone. Just this stupid abs/weird shifting problem.

Drove it home from work and got the flashing arrow and engine light on. Codes are p0756 and p1618. So I will be getting probably both shift solenoids and installing them this week. Shift solenoids don't really go bad but it's worth a try. Easier than dropping the tranny. I've done them before on my buddies volvo sedan without dropping the sub-frame to.

Could someone please tell me how the PNP switch works in these car!!! I still search out the code P0756 and everyone is saying that it's replated to a bad or dirty PNP switch. I would love to know how that is possible? How does it have any input on what gear the transmission is shifting into other you me physically putting it in drive?

I already removed it and cleaned it but I might just need to be replaced? I don't want to replace it for nothing and it seems alot of other people have changed it for this same problem as me with no luck and then others don't post back so you never know if it solved the problem or not.

It comes up because of the flashing arrow(p0756). I just unplugged the abs fuse and module. I don't know if I should be driving around like this but at least the flashing arrow stops and I have 3 speeds. As long as I keep the speed under 80km/h it shifts fine. It just doesn't shift into 4th gear.

PNP failure or shift solenoids? I just want a good explaination of how the PNP switch controls/effects shift points in the transmission. It seems to be the first thing everyone says to replace or clean when you have a transmission shift problem. I though the PNP only has anything to do with the shifter itself and nothing to do with the internal shifting of the transmission? I could be wrong but still can't find any solid info on this wizard like part?

Hi peeps, I am experiencing same problem, bought the car with the engine, Abs, traction control warning lights and shift arrow flashing
Replaced the abs units and no more warning lights but I have noticed the car is running @ 4000 revs doing only 80mph. So am guessing am not getting the fourth gear too. Gonna take it over to have it checked tmr

Tho mine revs very freely, in fact it goes all the way but u can hear the engine is screaming begging to change up

Did you change the tranny fluid yourself? If so what method did you use? I have heard of loosing the top gear if a certain (can't remember which one) bolt has been removed.The only fix was to rebuild the transmission . Sorry I can't be of any more help.
