Here are a couple of topics from VADIS regarding Limp home mode. VADIS is the equivalent of a factory service manual. It covers many years and models of Volvos including yours. It is on a CD which you can usually purchase for a few dollars on ebay.

And the transmission shop is treating me like I am dumb. They said two days ago they would have the diagnosis ready for me. Two days later, they still haven't done anything with it. Wow... Will post results whenever they get their act together.

Oops hit submit before I was finnished. If you are near Macon, Jackson Automotive on Riverside Ave worked with me when I was on a limited budget. Just an opinion, I would sort out the battery problem first, low voltage causes a host of problems in these cars. And if you now have a bad feeling about the shop, I would get it out of there. Good luck

Quick update, the transmission shop says it is definitely the solenoid but they don't have any way of checking it to make sure without taking the tranny out. Yay. They want $2200 for a rebuild. I found someone who is cheaper. I've read somewhere that rebuilds are probably junk too. Is this true? Ugh, I just want my damn car on the road with me in the driver seat.

PM "jblackburn". He is a moderator here. I believe he has been through the solenoid issue with his tranny in the past. I'm sure he can tell you how to check the solenoid without removing the tranny.

Here is a guy who specializes in the transmission used in your car. You may wish to try to wade through his site. He has a lot of information and it would arm you with good information when going to a transmission shop.
You could even print out what he does/recommends for the Volvo S80 version of the transmission and take it along to any shop who you might consider asking to do the rebuild for you. Ask the shop what they would do to 'harden up' the transmission.

PS Edit: I don't believe it is necessary to remove the transmission to replace/check/access the solenoids, but it is still a lot of work to get to and remove the valve cover where the solenoids are located. If one is to replace the solenoids and I say solenoids (plural), then it one might as well go all the way and replace any worn or suspect parts at the same time. If you don't go all the way, then replace all the solenoids at least.
