Severe Coolant System Issues '99 S80 2.9L Non-Turbo

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

That's the thing, the car has never overheated, it is just gushing coolant all over the place. The odd thing is that if it is on a downward slope, the pool is right under the front fog light, if it is on level ground, it is directly under the tank, on the ground, and if upward slope, the pool is under the passenger door. Now granted these are somewhat steep slops 10-20 degree slopes but it has to be the tank or hose, because I am not sure what else would cause it to do what I just described.

However, starting with the cap sounds like a good place to start. Do you think a place like AutoZone or NAPPA Auto Parts have the cap? If you are outside of the US, basically any chain of auto parts stores. Or is this an online only item?

Thanks! :D

Just a quick update. I replaced the cap and it was still leaking. When I went out today the was a huge puddle under the car. I just purchased an expansion tank and it should be here by the middle of this coming week. If it sill leaks after that, then I am going to replace hoses. If that's not it I will have to take it to a shop, which I am not looking forward to doing.

Sigh my car, needs to stop finding out when I have extra money, because it likes to spend it.

If you dont know where the leak is for sure then I would get a pressure test kit from harbour freight. Pump the system to 20psi. Let it settle for 10 mins, pump back up to 20psi and see if you can locate the leak. Sometimes it helps to exchange the glycol in the system with distilled water to find the leaks as it is less viscous.

Ah, nice tip! I will try that if it is not the tank. I am almost certain that it is the tank. I am somewhat contributing it to the excessive heat that we have been having, it might have cracked the tank.

Thanks alot! Do you happen to know the price of the test kit?

Thanks for the info!

Unfortunately now I have a new problem. I replaced the expansion tank yesterday, and everything seemed to go well, but the coolant light will not go off and it is giving me an error of "Coolant Low Stop Engine" or "Coolant Low Stop Safely ASAP". Would resetting the car fix this error? Or is the sensor bad? It was working great before I swapped tanks, and the temperature has not gone over running temperature, and I refilled the tank with brand new anti-freeze to the proper line.

The great news that I don't have any more leaks! The bad news is that the old tank had cracks all over it. Both connectors for the hoses were cracked and falling to pieces and the tank itself was cracked along the seam. I will take some pictures of it and post them when I get a chance. I was surprised at how brittle it was when we took the hoses off, especially the connection for the hose on top of the tank.

Thanks again!

Did you remember to swap over the coolant level sensor from the old tank to the new? Not sure about your tank but you have to do that on an 850/s70.

Actually the top hose looks fine! Just take an inch or 2 off it. and clean the ends with a small brush or something. The bottom hose looks fine to. Do the same if needs cut an inch or 2 off. But only if needed if its not the tank. I bet for sure its the tank. Cause those hoses look fine!. how many miles u got on her?

@ cmblackburn: I have a leveling sensor that pops out of the bottom of the tank that is attached to the engine compartment. You can see it in the third photo of the tank, it is right under the power steering hose. That is the dominate hose in the photo. You can see the wires going underneath the tank. That is my leveling sensor.

@ hanzbe420: When we took the hose off the top nozzle, the nozzle was cracked and was so brittle that it literally fell apart. Thankfully we got all of the pieces out of the hose and we did not have to cut any of them. :D Right now I got about 127,311 the last time I looked.

If the coolant level temp circuit is open then you will get the level warning on the dash. So if it wasnt connected for some reason you would get that message,
