Well following all the great advice, I can strike off the cooling fan I believe.

Using Lee's advice I tested the relay itself after checking the fan and ETC/temp sensor unit which checked out.

Used a length of wire and clip to attached the wire to the earth strap at the top of the block near the top torque mount. I knew this was good as I use it for the -ve lead for my battery tender and it works fine.

Disconnected the middle connector on the relay and used a small electrical screw driver to touch each of the relay contacts in turn (1 for each speed). Both ran the fan up immediately and fan slowed when removed. So relay also looks good. Ignition does not need to be on, as Lee rightly stated the red lead to the relay is a constant live.

On to look at other cooling options for the leak. Thanks for all with the help on getting this far.
