Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

I had not- after hearing the squealing I just came on home...
I should do that- I have done 4 drives pushing it to 40 or 50 mph and then slamming on the brakes and almost coming to a stop...letting the brakes cool and then doing it again. What have you used?

Now, hard braking causes the ABS to engage.
Does anyone know what causes this?
Should I rebuild the calipers with a caliper kit?

Clean the ABS sensors and reluctance rings on the axles with an old toothbrush and some solvent - carb cleaner, Simple Green, etc work well. Hopefully that helps.

I always take the rotors for resurface job when it comes the time for brake pad replacing.Usually you can replace 2 sets of brake pads to one set of rotors. After that, rotors are at least out of spec or at at discard thickness. Here in Europe...every shop is doing resurface of the rotors when changing brake pads, exactly because of too many customer complaints about squealing brakes after replacing the pads.MadeInJapan wrote:So it has always been my take to never turn Volvo rotors- I've replaced pad sets after pad sets without doing this without any issues. However, my son's 850's front breaks squeal badly when coming to a stop.
I was also experiencing that squeal back in 2000 when i bought my car.I replaced brake pads without resurfacing the rotors and the noise during braking was like the train is comming to a stop.I took the car to a "brake" shop, they resurfaced my rotors, said that i need to be carefull during "bedding-in" period(to not overheat the brakes in first 300-500km) and i never had that squeal again.

The thing is I resurfaced both rotors and pads so that is not the issue...I will try cleaning the sensor. Otherwise, I have an issue with the calipers I think...but they are not sticking.

I used some goop from Permetex called Disc Brake Quiet on my son's car. He had meat on the pads but I have no idea what brand they were. It did work.

There is no such thing as resurfacing the pads. It is neither an industry practice nor done by any mechanic who has a legitamate business. Your liability insurance carrier will drop you like a hot potato as soon as the first customer crashes his car and blame you for resurfacing the pads
Bedding In is only good for new Rotors and Pads. When two pieces of glass are flat against each other there is a lot of friction. You would not want the pads and rotor to be glass like or the brakes will grab but during the Seating process the pads and rotors are being made flatter and smoother very quickly depending on your method. Resurfacing the pads will leave you with so much gap here, there everywhere you could not Seat It or worse case scenario create hot spots on the Rotor causing grippy braking or warp rotor.regent wrote:MIJ,

+1 on always having the rotors turned as it is Standard Practice but there are many cars that you can get away with a "Pad Slap" and never experience squeal. So far so good with the Pad Slap with the O'Reilly Organic Rear Pads for my T5.misha wrote:I always take the rotors for resurface job when it comes the time for brake pad replacing.Usually you can replace 2 sets of brake pads to one set of rotors.
