This is an excellent guide. I have 2 questions though.
1) There is a brass pin and a hair spring that fit into the clasp mechanism. I took the unit apart a couple of days ago and cannot figure out how the hairspring fits in. I realise the brass pin goes through the center of the coil. and the long hooked end goes to the top and the short part locks against the plastic flange on the cover, but what the hell is the purpose of this spring? Does the hooked end hook over something that I'm not getting? A clear picture of how it sits would be great and appreciated!
2) There is provision for a spring mid way between the locking latch and the center clip. I've seen a photo of a spring over the hook on the middle of the rod and the other end of the spring looping round a plastic pin on the cover. My car does not appear to have a spring when I took it apart, and the photos on this guide show no spring. Is it needed?
Thanks.

As no-one came forward with any help, I looked again at the unit today and ended up answering my own questions!
1) Hair spring has a purpose! It pre-loads the locking clasp so when you pull on the handle it pushes the glove box lid slightly to help it release from the clasp. Should fit with the longer curved end upward and the shorter part locks against the flange on the plastic inner cover.
2)There IS a spring midway on th hook. Mine had dislodged and I found it on my work bench later!

Sure wish I had seen this sooner. I "removed" my stuck glove box with "extreme prejudice". Now use a magnetic catch. All in all, it works.

Magic fix! I used a 3mm drill and lock door popped as I drilled. (Didn't touch the handle!) The hole is barely noticeable.
Unfortunately, as I checked the fit on the lock clasp the other (longer) pin snapped. Doh!
Same repair method works for this also.
However, have found an excellent parts outlet and have ordered a repair kit from PFS Parts Ltd., www.partsforvolvos.com at the price of £22.34, postage extra. Excellent service from this supplier.
