I love this DVD.
I bought the OTP 850 Service Manual DVD (OTP TP-51956) recently from FCP Euro for $44.99 (plus another item to get the order over $50 to qualify for free shipping).
But first I did some homework and discovered assorted facts from the following pages:
- fcpeuro.com's volvo-repair-manual-cd-rom-850-tp-51956
title: FCP Euro order page for "Volvo Repair Manual CD-ROM (850) - TP-51956"
- MVS's volvo-repair-manual-cd-rom.html
title: Volvo Repair Manual CD-ROMs / Original Technical Publications
- MVS's original-technical-publications-850.html
title: Original Technical Publications 850 DVD
- MVS's https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=52931
title: "Original Technical Publications" review/comments/questions
- OTP / LockLizard's http://bit.ly/O1l83r
title: OTP LockLizard DVD FAQ & Support Manual
and I saved copies of each of those pages/documents for reference purposes.
After receiving the OTP 850 Service Manuals TP-51956 DVD, I read the DVD jacket and kept "the DVD case with the serial number on it" (as Matthew suggested) by scanning it into a .pdf file. That way, I can throw away the DVD jacket at some time in the future. Additionally, I made another copy of the Activation code in a text file.
I also made a note to save the .llv license file when it comes in a subsequent e-mail, since that .llv file will (supposedly) be needed if and when the OTP / LockLizard Safeguard protected PDF viewer is moved from the 32-bit WinXP laptop that I've installed it on to some newer machine on which the manuals would be easier to access while in the car.
Somewhere I read that when performing the LockLizard portion of the Activation, you should connect to the internet "directly" from the machine which you'll be running the OTP software on. You should avoid VPN or remote connections.
After the preparatory work, I followed something similar to the sequence below:
1. Establish "simple" connection to Internet -- no Internet Connection Sharing through another machine, no proxies, no virtual private network, no "private" browsing, nothing fancy, so the LockLizard server will be able to see both an accurate IP address and an accurate browser user-agent.
2. Click English.
3. Click Terms, read them, click Continue.
4. Read the Introduction screen, then click
"IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT
USING THIS PRODUCT".
5. Read the IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT USING THIS PRODUCT, then click "Activate Now".
6. Exit OTP at this point by clicking Exit on the left-hand column, then Exit on the right-hand side.
7. A few minutes later, retrieve your e-mail from the LockLizard license server -- it's from a locklizard license oriented domain, yet has a Reply-To field of [email protected] and a Cc: field of what looks like someone's initials at the otpubs.com domain.
8. Click on the appropriate link in the e-mail for the operating system which your present machine is running.
This will be the machine which you'll be viewing the DVD from.
8a. In my case, I chose Windows, then on the resultant http://www.locklizard.com/safeguard-windows-viewer.htm page, I clicked the suggested "Windows - EXE" (2.6.41 / 18.2 MB / 02/24/2015), clicked Save, then waited for it to download.
8b. After the download finished, right-click on the downloaded program (SafeguardPDFViewer.exe), select "Run As Administrator" (or in my case it was "Run As...").
8c. On the "Run As..." dialog box, uncheck "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity". I actually left that item checked the first time I executed 8b, but it produced an "unable to open archive file" error. So I unchecked the "Protect my computer..." option and the "Run As..." dialog box completed.
8d. Click OK or Continue or Next or Finish or whatever was the appropriate button.
9. Read Locklizard End User License Agreement, then agree to it.
10. Use defaults for the remainder of the installation process.
11. Return to the browser page that displayed the LockLizard Safeguard PDF Viewer installation instructions for your machine and follow its remaining instructions concerning the license file. In my case, this involved...
Click the "download your license file" link in the e-mail which is ostensibly from Original Technical Publications (per the documentation), but actually comes from a LockLizard license server.
12. Select "Open with": "Locklizard Safeguard - PDF Viewer (default)".
A message dialog box opens and says:
"Thank you. You have successfully registered for accessing protected
documents created by Original Technical Publications.
Support email address : [email protected]"
13. Click OK.
14. You could try the sample tests. I tried them and they didn't work. But I suspected the installation still had worked, so I continued...
15. Experimented for hours, and OH! was I surprised at the WEALTH of info available !!!
I only wished I had bought this 3.5 years ago when I started exploring in earnest how to communicate via the OBDII port. If I had bought this 3.5 years ago, it would have saved me weeks of work !!!
16. Reexecute the instructions about retrieving the license file, in order to make a copy of it in case the disk crashes or the .llv file needs to be copied to a new machine.
16a. Open up the "download your license file" link in the e-mail from Original Technical Publications / LockLizard.
16b. Select "Save As" or "Save", then save it to the Desktop using the suggested filename.
16c. Then later copy to a more appropriate permanent place.
17. Conclusions:
17a. Using the OTP / LockLizard Safeguard PDF (PDC) Viewer works on Windows essentially the same as Matthew described for the Mac -- except on Windows the programs are called: a) OTP.exe, and b) Locklizard Safeguard PDF Viewer (ie, PDCViewer.exe). The sizes of those executables on Windows is much different than on the Mac. But they work the same way -- "You start in OTP, which hands off to LLSV when you select a document to view" -- and apparently have the exact same screens.
17b. The Activation process is cumbersome, but do-able.
17c. In my opinion, the DVD is well worth $45.
17d. To me the DVD seems especially suited for complex, hard-to-figure-out cases.
17e. I can see how one of my preferred DTC diagnostic resources recently -- volvopedia.de's Fehlercode-Tabelle -- is actually pulling a lot of its info from the Volvo info that's been put on this DVD. But the DVD contains a whole lot more detail beyond what the Fehlercode-Tabelle has.
17f. The DVD documents the live data and the freeze frame data for the respective ECUs very well.
17g. The DVD contents can be copied to the hard drive under WinXP, like Matthew did for his Mac. I copied the entire DVD using Windows Explorer to a newly created folder on a hard drive -- preserving the CDs sub-directory structure (of course), so the programs would still run. This required no changes to the AUTORUN files. Extraneous languages were deleted to save space. Then, from the directory which OTP.exe resides in on the hard drive, I created a shortcut, moved that shortcut to the Desktop, then renamed the shortcut to "850 Service Manuals (OTP TP-51956)". All I have to do is double-click that shortcut, select English, Continue, Volvo Technical Publications, and choose Spare Parts Publications vs. Service Publications.
17h. I have not been able to open up the .pdc files (on the hard disk) individually with Locklizard Safeguard PDC Viewer using Windows Explorer, since when opening the directory, there is an error that inhibits any other actions. So I haven't pursued this. I am content to use the OTP.exe interface.
18. I did not evaluate if you could print any pages or not from the OTP 850 Service Manuals using the LockLizard Safeguard PDF Viewer.
19. Thanks.
- Volvo, thanks for having produced this info in the first place.
- OTP, thanks for putting this DVD together.
- Matthew, thanks for the review.
- FCP Euro, thanks for selliing this to me.
- bmdubya1198, thanks for documenting a Clear DTCs response of "7F AF 22" after a successful Read DTCs. That case -- possibly in conjunction with a well-timed advertisement from FCP Euro -- is the trigger that prompted me to research this DVD to aid in your problem diagnosis.
I...like...this...DVD !
- Yes, I would like it to be searchable.
- Yes, I would like to be able to copy selected parts to the clipboard.
- Yes, I wished it could be freely copied to my other computers -- whichever is most convenient to use at the time.
- Yes, the really thorough MVS how-tos (and other Volvo DIY site's how-tos) are sometimes better, or even much better, for how we DIY-ers go about fixing things.
- Yes, I want it to have color photos and color how-to videos.
- Yes, I'd like [email protected] to respond in a timely manner to paulrfink and anyone else who doesn't receive an e-mail after having attempted the "Activate Now".
But I'll be content to glean from the DVD info I've wanted to know for 3 years, but haven't been able to figure out any other way.

How to view two manuals simultaneously in separate LockLizard Safeguard secure viewer windows (eg, to compare differences in the two documents, or to view info from both ECM and TCM, or to simultaneously see both a high level and a detailed view of something):
- From the full screen OTP window, open the 1st document.
- Wait for LockLizard Safeguard secure viewer window to open.
- Click the button in upper right corner to toggle from full screen to a smaller window.
- Click in the grey area which is the background for the full screen OTP window.

Max of three (3) LockLizard Safeguard secure viewer windows can be open at the same time from the OTP Volvo 850 DVD.
For example,
- one for TP-2318031 (or TP-2318201) to see the difference between P1618 and P1617 for a Motronic 4.4's EFI-335 DTC,
- one for TP-2308032 to see the previous year's detailed diagnostic info for EFI-335 (since TP-2318031 and TP-2318201 did not include the detailed diagnostic info for EFI-335), and
- one for TP-3917201 to see the ground point designations in the List of Components in the latest wiring diagram which seemed applicable and to see the overall Electrical Distribution wiring diagram to see all the car's ground points.
I would have liked to have a higher number, since hard-to-debug situations require cross-referencing a number of different documents. But it's still quite usable.

OTP Volvo 850 DVD includes "Wiring Diagrams C70/S70/V70 1999 (TP-3941032)" and "Wiring Diagrams C70/S70/V70 1999 (TP-3943032)". These are for the P2 S70/V70/C70 with Electronic Throttle, Denso, CAN bus, etc. Seems to me it makes no sense to include them in an 850 oriented DVD. It would have been far more useful for OTP to have included the "Wiring Diagrams S70/V70 1998 C70 Coupe 1998 (TP-3932202)" on the OTP Volvo 850 DVD, since the '98 S70/V70 are so similar to the 850.
At least it can be found at by doing a web search for "1998_S70_V70_C70_Coupe.pdf".

Some of the OTP Volvo 850 DVD documents **are** searchable using Locklizard Safeguard Secure PDF Viewer's Ctrl-F function or its menu's Document / "Find Text" function !!!
At least some of the documents on the OTP Volvo 850 DVD **are** indeed very searchable via Ctrl-F or via the Document / Find Text function.
These documents are known to be searchable:
- Wiring Diagrams 850 1997 (TP-3917201) -- [should be used with its 1996 counterpart, which unfortunately is not searchable].
- Wiring Diagrams 850 1995 (TP-3907202).
- Combined Instrument, Yazaki S70/V70/C70 1998- (TP-3802201) -- [though must search for "221" to find "CI-221"].
- AW 50-42 transmission control module (TCM) 850 1996- (TP-4312031).
- Brakes (incl. ABS and TRACS) 850 1996- [Preliminary edition] (TP-5002201).

- Wiring Repairs and Replacement Of Cable Terminals 800, 900 (TP-3703031).
- Maybe some others are searchable.
These documents are known to *not* be searchable:

It is true that the majority are *not* searchable, but it is nice that at least some important OTP Volvo 850 DVD documents are searchable.
