Axle popped out (was RIP Transmission?)

Circlip Volvo part# 1377060
$24 at the dealer (!)

I got this used one just now (free) from a tech working in a bay at the same dealer... I told him what happened and asked if he had any. He had a few, gave me one.

Installation to commence this afternoon.

One does not simply kill an AW50-42LE.

Unless, of course, you never change the fluid. But even then!

Looks like you used Carquest replacement axles?

If I wasn't so tired, I'd be angry, or confused. Turns out after tearing into it this afternoon... there's no clip channel on the remanufactured axle I bought a little over a year ago.

There's the original axle on removal, November, 2011.

Here's the CarQuest reman axle, in the car since November, 2011. Circlip in the frame to provide illustration of WHERE IN THE #@&% DOES IT GO?! Note the ground extreme edge of the splines, worn when the axle popped out yesterday.

My mistake 13 months ago was not looking closely for differences between the one I pulled out and the reman I bought. I took it in and put it on the counter, and remember being concerned with the overall length and axle nut size. Didn't see the circlip difference. Live and learn.

I'll call them tomorrow and ask what they can do.

Yuk! I'm about to redo the axles on the S70 GLT in the next few days.

The end looks a little shorter as well. I almost thought the tip of it broke off. :?

It does look like the tip broke off. Is the end nicely machined or could it have been eaten? maybe drain and fill the tranny and make sure there's no chunks in there.
1994 850 na green 187k on body, 275k on motor(backwards?), unrestricted airbox, 960 TB, persus wheels, Lowered, IPD poly upper and trans mounts.
1974 144 k-jet m40 satin black, 250k on body, 25k on rebuilt motor(running...usually)

The photo makes it look like it broke off, but it is the same old machined end that went in 13 months ago... but you guys did get me thinking for a second.

I think the splines are a touch shorter and the neck a touch longer on this reman.

Erik's right, buy Raxles or fight tooth and nail, unless you're really careful. I obviously should have stuck with OEM/Raxles :oops:.

$200 for both? That sounds like a pretty great deal considering you won't have to replace them for another 10 years.

Those prices are for just the driver's side axle. :evil: :cry: :o Rickenbaugh Volvo here in Denver quoted me $475, then $75 back with the core. Nearly five hundred dollars before core. My whole 850 is only worth four or five blue box axles!
