my 2000 c70 had them but the 99 interior I put in did not have the holes cut thru the rear deck cover.

They use a pretty large bolt just like the ones for seat belts and the seats.

Can you see the welded on nuts from the trunk?

Have you had any luck locating a supplier?

To clarify, "tether points" could refer to LATCH loops, which are located in the crease that separates the seat from the seatback. These LATCH loops appeared in cars around 2000. I have a 1998 V70 and it does NOT have LATCH loops. This is not a problem because it is perfectly safe to secure a child car seat using the seat belt instead of LATCH.

The question posed by the OP was referring to the TOP tether attach point. This is a point where one can attach a strap leading from the TOP of the child car seat, over the top of the seatback, and a hook can snap on.

There are three attach points for child car seat "top tether straps" - one for each seat position in the second row. They are located on the back of the seats, in a carpeted area that is normally vertical when you have the seat back in its normal upright position. Here is a picture of a newer model (this is NOT a 1998 Volvo) showing the POSITION of top tether attach points. So if you have a newer car, you may have these attach points already, in which case you can ignore the rest of this post. https://www.cstatic-images.com/stock/76 ... 510464602.

The 1998 Volvo did not have built in attachments like those shown in the picture above - but it did have the threaded nut that allows the user to mount an attach point. In order to attach a "top tether strap" one must
1. buy the attachment kit
2. hunt around on the seat back and determine the location of the threaded nut
3. expose the threaded nut
4. bolt on the attachment kit.

1. The attachment kit (you will need one for each seat or seat position you need to attach to). This is Volvo part number 9136928 and it is available from the local Volvo dealer. I bought one seven years ago and another one just now. The price was $19.95 each time. The attachment kit includes three pieces: an attachment point, a bolt, and a washer. You can see a diagram at http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/showA ... ct=1198324

You can also order it from http://www.volvopartswebstore.com - the price is the same ($19.95) but they charge $12 for shipping. This is why I bought mine at the dealer. NOTE: the dealer did not have this in stock; they had to order it and it took a week or two to arrive.

2. hunt around on the seat back and determine the location of the threaded nut, and 3. expose the threaded nut.

Most Volvos have a plastic plug inserted into the upholstery on the seat back showing the location of the threaded nut. Simply pry out the plastic plug with a screwdriver, exposing the nut. Then use a socket wrench to screw in the attach point using the bolt and washer included in the kit. Location of the plug:

Some cars don't have the plastic plugs - instead the threaded nut was simply hidden under the thin carpeting that covers the back of the rear seat. In my 1998 Volvo, there were plastic plugs for the two outboard positions, but for the middle seat position, the threaded nut was simply hidden under the thin carpeting that covers the back of the rear seat. In this case you need to do some hunting. Guess at the approximate location using the picture above, and find the nut by feeling through the carpeting with your fingers. The nut will be detectable as a raised bump with a hole in the middle of it.

NOTE on the MIDDLE SEAT ANCHOR POINT: as mentioned by one previous poster, the nut in the middle seat position is significantly lower down than the nuts on the outer seats. It's located so far down that it's not visible when the seatback is in its normal upright position! So you will have to lower the seatback (as if you were going to carry a large piece of furniture) in order to access the nut!

Once you find the nut, use a pocket knife, a kitchen knife, or a screwdriver to cut the fabric enough to expose the nut. Then bolt on the attachment kit.

Another note: you can re-position the attachment point when needed. I bought one attachment point and initially mounted it in the middle position for our first child since his car seat was mounted in the middle (recommended for safety in the case of a side impact). Later when second child arrived, but was in a rear-facing seat, I moved the attachment point to the side that the older child would be on. Now that both children are in front-facing seats, I am buying a second attachment point, one for each outboard seat.
