I will have to say for a car that is 15 years old, the inside look is pretty up to date. My 2006 V70 is a lot like the 98 with a few changes. Not getting to drive it much, I tend to forget what has been moved on it. I think the roof switch is up above windshield. Wine holder is nicer. The little front pouch on the seat is a great place to loose your phone for two days, until you remember you put it there for safe keeping.

My driver between 2004-2006 was my 96 850R
Great R but even after two years I could not find the window (and to a lesser degree) the mirror switches
Sorry but it's not intuitive
Earlier Benz's are also on the console and they're just as guilty for their interiors being very funky
I'm driving around (now) in my friend's PERFECT -01-02 E320 wagon, I have no idea what all the buttons are all about.
Nice wagon otherwise

This illustrates yet another reason why America does not need cupholders.

The window switches in the center console baffled me. My mother used to put her purse on top and things would start moving randomly. She hated that aspect.

The 98-2000 70 series cars are much more modern than the 850's. I enjoy my 850 because I feel it to be built more solidly than the 1999 V70 I just picked up, but the design is nicer on the 70 series. The seats are better too, wow the 70 series seats are nice.

These are some of the last cars that one can work on themselves but still fairly modern. At some point mine is going to get to the point where things will really start breaking on it, and I'll have to let it go. No idea what I will get in it's place.

I've never liked having the window switches and mirror switches on the door. My right hand automatically finds them on the center console; very intuitive for me. Trying to find buttons on the door while driving is such a pain.

I really do enjoy the lines of the 850 dash. No offense to the s/v70 people but I think the dash and console switches look a lot cheaper in those cars compared to the 850 switches.

The originality and quirkiness of the center console window switches and the vertical door handles help make the 850 interior really interesting.

Yours had cup holders?! Musta been an S

Mine had lots of quirks besides the ignition switch...
-The interior light worked when it wanted.
-You had to smack the dash to get the left speaker to work.
-The right rear door shut and unlocked differently from the rest of the car.
-Stalled incessantly if you tried to drive before the O2 sensor warmed up. It would also randomly sit and crank for 2 minutes before catching (we suspected it was either the valves not closing, or the car flooding itself randomly)
-The window crank knob liked to pop off in my hand.

I love to drive and do enjoy my 850. After owning one for over 4 years, I'm still reaching for my door for the window switches. It's a shame. I have a set of back door switches to attempt to mod into the front doors. It drives me nuts.

Most of the rest is a pleasure, I like the ability to add switches in the dash row. I have also moved my switches around a little. Love the lighting but have struggled for a place for my Scan Gauge.

As for the seats, they are the 3rd best that I have ever sat in. My #1 choice being in my daughters S70. I have a few 19 hour driving days under my belt and not long ago I drove from 5:30 am to 10:00 pm in the 850 with no bodily complaint at all. The S70 is better only because it has a softer touch, kinda like a pillow top firm mattress. I'm not tall so it fits perfect for me. I think someone over 6 ft may feel different.

Wish I could figure out how to add the door lock switch, I have one dash spot left (no antenna switch). LOL
