No i don't believe it is connected to anything. It is just sitting in there. Nothing but a magnet will get to it.

It looks bigger than the teeth.

Are you saying it sat in the bore it is now pictured in ,but was pushed past the end and is now loose?

It was never pushed past the teeth right?

If so- why not pull out the drivers cv axle and work it from the other side. You would have a straight shot at it through the differential

There is a spider gear shaft in the diff that will slightly block you but you can use a couple of pieces of welding rod or similar (coat hanger etc) to manipulate it. I hope it doesn't have a piece like this on the driver side.

They make deck screws that are 3 1/2 " long. If you were to drill-driver one of those close to an edge and then vise-grip it and pull the piece either out or at least part sideways then you could unscrew the screw and maybe pry it the rest of the way to a 90 degree position and then long needle nose pliers or vise grips to pull it out.
I have never seen a RH axle with a cap on it. The LH on some GM gearbox left axles is hollow and has a cap. (if the cap comes loose trans fluid and cv joint grease inter-mix and kills the trans. Like a GM gearbox needs any help dying on its own...)

No it sits around the bore inside. I can't pull it threw because I need to get it back on the end of the bore in the trans. It keeps the fluid in the trans if o pull it out there will be nothing to keep the fluid in the trans...

Yup -that's exactly what I was saying. It sat in the bore we are looking down and got pushed out of the bore. Its an end cap of sorts for the bore.

My advise stands - pull the drivers side cv and re-align and tap back into the bore.

I don't recall a plug in the inside of the axle splines on AWD AW 55-50/51 transmissions. I'm not curious enough to go pull my R apart to look. I know the TF80 is open to the diff as is AW-50-42 4 speeds with AWD. There is sealing to stop fluid from leaking at RH side of angle gear. There are two seals there. One for the ring gear carrier shaft to case, outer seal, and the other is carried by the ring gear carrier shaft to seal the RH drive axle. The fluid level is below the axle height unless engine is off for a time and torque converter drains and gives increased level in trans.
There is no need for a stop on RH side as pillow bearing on RH axle with saddle clamp is the location control for that axle laterally.

Ok I don't think you guys understand. BOTH side have caps on them. It goes AROUND the splined sleeve the axle slides into (not the transfer case). It doesn't just pull out... The is also the same cap on the driverside axle sleeve. So I can't just push it back on from the other side. It does need to be capped because it holds the fluid in. I'm just going to take the trans apart and fix it.
