Re: Dashboard Mount Repair - Version 2.0

Post by kmesse »

Anybody here? I hear an echo...

Did the job in a couple days. The dash airbag, the climate controls, and the mounts themselves are all different for my car, 1999 S70. Next time I won't remove the dashpad. I rebuilt the mounts using the JBweld Marine putty, excellent stuff. When I got to the climate controls, I could NOT get the panel removed. It did not pull forward, and I couldn't get the knobs off to get at any screws. So it was painful but I managed to remove the 2 connectors from the back blindly, and removed 2 cables that were going to the air ducts. If anyone has my model, when you reattach those 2 cables, attach them to the ducts before you clip them in place or it will restrict the heat knobs from turning all the way. You'll know what I mean.

I have 2 screws left over... but the thing is rock solid now. Happy.

You have the manual climate control rather than the electronic unit. The cables are a bear to deal with (as you found out) and, at least on one of my 850s with the manual climate unit I found that it is easier to unclip the cables from the climate unit itself and leave the controller in the dash.

yes, that's what I did. Had to use a pick to get one of the connectors out though.

There should be shots of the firewall in this video. I don't think you can add mounts.

Hi Robert! I had your video up constantly doing this, it guided me every step, thanks. Your other vids too! I've been living here the past couple months. Great to interact with this forum!

No, no place to attach anthing else really, and it looks like in my year the mounts were different than the other versions I've seen posted. It actually looks LESS robust than your mounts. So the jbweld putty really beefed up that whole area and worked perfectly. We'll see for how long. It does seem that all the force is from pulling away rather than up and down so I attached some flashing strips to reinforce them from pulling foward. Don't know how much that helps but it didn't hurt. I'll try to upload a pic if I can figure out how.

ah, THERE's the attachments... here's a broken mount, and a rebuilt one using the jbweld marine putty. I can't fathom how a few 1/16" pieces of plastic are supposed to hold a dash in place. I also fashioned straps out of ductwork material to pull it backward because it seemed the problem is that it pulls away rather than up/down.

Alright,

- Time for the ghetto trick.
- Went to hardware store and bought 1 foot of 1/4-inch clear vinyl tubing (this way I can't see it while driving, strictly a cosmetic issue).
- Cut a few pieces about 3-4 inches long.
- Then a wedge these pieces between the dash trim and the glass as cushion.

Car is quiet, for now...

Yikes!!! Afraid that will do more damage to the back of the dash. Part of those mounts are part of the duct system. If they break away more, they will cause large air leaks in the vent system.

When you go back there to fix it, get some of that metal backed AC duct tape to patch up the duct work cracks.

IMO not replacing the front strut spring seats in time compromises the front struts from not working and contributes to the failure of the already fragile plastic dash mounts every time you hit a pothole or speed bump and hear that "BANG!"
