Sad thing is that this engine only has 155K on it and should have ran another 100k. O' well what can you do?

Do you think If I clean up this oil pan and hopefully the blow by issue too that it may extend the engine life a little longer?
If she goes I'll put a new engine in her, I probably should start looking now.

Are there any write ups on rebuilds???????jblackburn wrote:Time for a new engine/new car.ManManOhMan wrote:What do you think is the best course of action to take?
Judging by that bearing failing, and the PCV smoking as badly as it is even after you cleaned it, the oil pan is probably sludged up pretty bad (and the top end too).
If you're mechanically inclined, you could rebuild the lower end. Otherwise, it will soon be time for a new engine. The engine is on borrowed time. You may be able to drive it conservatively for a month or two. I've seen the old 4-cyl Volvo motors go on for years with knock, but I'm not sure how long a 5-cyl will last.

Not really. But it would be interesting to know which cylinder has the problem and see if you can find out why.ManManOhMan wrote:Do you think If I clean up this oil pan and hopefully the blow by issue too that it may extend the engine life a little longer?

You could try a thicker oil to limp it along for a bit longer, though I doubt it will really do much.
Here's what you'll be looking for if you took the oil pan off.

Can you hear the way the bearing knock changes as the engine revs/falls? As the load on the bearing changes, so does the noise. Thats the tell-tale differentiator from valvetrain noise.
Ive never done a pan drop on a Volvo so I dont know how bad it is to get to the bottom end. You could check compression and if its good, try a bottom end bearing replacement with guidance from experts.

Another way to tell is to unplug each spark plug one at a time and see if the knocking goes away when one cylinder is "unloaded".abscate wrote:Can you hear the way the bearing knock changes as the engine revs/falls? JBlackburn, thank you for that video.
Seriously, as soon as I heard it, I'm like this is the same exact noise my car is making and this is very interesting to me because I'm trying to understand how an engine actually functions, what each component does and to definitely be able to diagnose/fix any problems like this.

Abscate and J Blackburn,
Awesome, I'm going to approach this and find out which cylinder is doing this.
Is there any literature you guys know of regarding a bottom end bearing replacement?

I haven't seen anything (here) for a Volvo, but there are general videos all over Youtube. You could do a search on Volvospeed as well, though I think most people just end up doing an engine swap since there are plenty of these out there for parts.ManManOhMan wrote:Abscate and J Blackburn,

I've been looking at the various videos on Youtube regarding this procedure as you said. This seems like a pain to do without a lift but I'm determined and I don't mind busting my rear and getting dirty.
So what would you guys say?
Step 1, find the cylinder that's causing the rod knock
Step 2, replace all the necessary components (please help with the terminologies)and torque down to spec.
So it looks like either way it goes I'm going to have to drop the pan. I'm down and actually eager to do this job.
