1994 850 Turbo Engine Tick/Knock Between 1st and 2nd Gear

Post by ManManOhMan »

To All,

I have a very loud ticking/knocking noise that's coming from my engine when I accelerate between 1st and 2nd gear. Once passed 1st and 2nd gear this noise is not there or just may be not noticeable. Upon looking into this issue with the car running and parked, when I rev the engine it makes the described noise (the harder I rev, the louder the noise).

As some members may know, I've been dealing with a blow-by issue with the all problems that come with blow by (even after replacing the PCV system). The reason I bring this up is because the car has been throwing up massive amounts of oil from the dipstick while I'm driving and to the point where I have to put in at least 1 quart of oil a week.

Right before this issue with the knocking/ ticking noises (the same day) I put 2 quarts of oil in. After checking out the noise with car running while in park as mentioned above, I checked my oil shortly after. The oil was bone dry!!!!, I couldn't believe it!!! I put another quart in instantly and couldn't even get a reading that I had put any oil in at all until I started the car back up and checked it afterwards!!

I need help/advice, what should I do? Do I need to drop the oil pan and clean everything up+change all the o-rings, or change the oil pump?

Either way it goes I have a feeling that this noise has derived from an oil issue. I'm going to upload a video with the above issues as soon as day breaks where I'm at. Thank you to All who can help me with this issue!!!!

Sincerely,
Manmanohman

Tick is usually top end in valve train, knock is the dreaded conn rod or bearing.

With as assistant, rev engine and listen with car colour matched hose pipe to ascertain location. Listen as s/he lifts her foot from gas...that's often when you will hear a conn rod knock.

Surprised you didn't have a pressure light.

You need to get under the car and figure out where the heck the oil's leaking from - it should be visible at that rate (or all over everything).

I suspect one of your cam seals blew out entirely.

Here's a video of the described tick/knock, for some reason this noise isn't as distinguishable on this video as if you where standing next to the vehicle.

Definitely a lower-end noise. Sounds like a rod bearing is loose but not quite gone yet.

My Oil light has been flickering on and off for the longest but has never stayed on for more than ten seconds I'd say. Literally, it flickers like a haunting!

By the way with the above video, you should have seen all the smoke that had came out the exhaust. I didn't see the smoke till after I'd already shut off the phone, otherwise I sure would have recorded it!

What do you think is the best course of action to take?

It's been in the process of letting go then. Probably wasn't getting oil at part of the lower end.

The smoke (top end) was probably just from the clogged up PCV/intake system soaked with oil. Looks like your dipstick's smoking pretty good, and that backs up PCV pressure/oil from turbo seals back into the intake side of the system.

Time for a new engine/new car.

Judging by that bearing failing, and the PCV smoking as badly as it is even after you cleaned it, the oil pan is probably sludged up pretty bad (and the top end too).

If you're mechanically inclined, you could rebuild the lower end. Otherwise, it will soon be time for a new engine. The engine is on borrowed time. You may be able to drive it conservatively for a month or two. I've seen the old 4-cyl Volvo motors go on for years with knock, but I'm not sure how long a 5-cyl will last.
