1+ to what jblackburn said above.

Note:
1. Thermostat: use Wahler 88C, about $15.

2. ECT: Volvo OEM is about $45. Or use SWF brand, which is OEM supplier.
Any other brand else is a gamble and can get you stranded.

  • Car will not start when temperature is below 10°F/-12°C. Cranks, but will not start.
Radiator fan runs all the time. Temperature Gauge shows normal temps, but cools while on the highway.
Heater can not keep the car warm in very cold temperatures on the highway. At 70mph at sub freezing temps, the temp gauge slowly decreases, and the heater puts out cold air.
Here in the Midwest(Northern Missouri), we have been experiencing very cold temperatures for a few weeks now. The only way to get my car started has been to push it into the dock area at work, and allow it to come up to temperature. Once the temperature is above 10°f, Emeli(my Volvo S70) starts right up.

In the morning, I plan on changing the Coolant Temperature Sensor and Thermostat. I will also be replacing the Airbox Sensor, Ambient Air Temperature Sensor and the Pre-Heater hose. I will post some photos of the process along with ohm readings ect., on the various parts I purchased and replaced.

Thanks for all the replys, everyone. The actual repairs have been delayed, as everyone in my house just went thru a nasty 24 hour flu. Daughter, -> 8 hours later, me, -> another 8 hours and my wife and "the brother-in-law who lives on my couch" are both complaining that they feeling like they were punched in the stomach.

But now that I can handle solid food again, I will be:
  • Flushing the coolant
    Replacing ECT
    Replacing Thermostat
    Replacing Pre-Heater Hose
Thanks again for everyone's helpful posts.

Coolant flush, ECT, Thermostat, Pre-Heater Hose, Ambient Temp Sensor and SAS Removal all completed. Thanks in large part to individuals here on this forum. So thanks everyone for all the help. The last CEL is 1308, which I believe is related to the A/C?

What is happening to that cat?
I am not an expert mechanic, but I will attempt any repair. Worst case scenario is I screw it up worse than it was.

87 745 Turbo Intercooler...333k, all original!

That is one of the earliest images of a "Winged Cat", and I always found the concept, interesting. So, that image has been a favorite of mine for many years.
