How is the alternatorparts.com voltage regulator holding up so far?

The aftermarket VR I have is not from alternatorparts.com, I just used their web site for the pics up there. The reason I have that aftermarket VR is because about 5 (?) years ago I paid a local shop to rebuild an alternator, that is what they put in. Looks like one of the cheap Chinese ones, e.g. it is not a Huco. I don't know where they got it. It is still doing fine, that alternator is now in the T5-R.

Gotcha. I just ordered one off of ebay. $36 with shipping. We'll see whether that ends up biting me in the behind.

Any advice on installing the new regulator? I just broke mine trying to get it into place.

I'm trying to reinstall it with the alternator still on the car. With those two prongs being so long it is difficult to compress them to allow the holes for the screws to line up. I just replaced the coolant and I'm trying to avoid removing the alternator which would require me to drain the coolant out again.

I need the expensive regulator Bosch 1-197-311-520 and FCP has it for $165, Advance Auto Parts
has the Huco replacement for $82 but not in stock - not available in stores and questionable
shipping time.
I went to Advance Auto parts and they didn't seem to have a clear answer about
if the part was available at all or how long it might take to ship:
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/huc ... +regulator
I wasn't sure about Huco but some comments above state that they are ok so I might try it.

I know that ours just needs brushes and I wish that they were available.

Great thread and pics.

I salute you guys for getting this done with the ALT in place. Alternator Tetris is one my least favorite games, but I don't see how I could get anything done in there in situ.

I've replaced the brushes in those before.

Actually just did it when we swapped the motor in the wife's '97 GLT. Swapped alternators a while back, due to a noisy bearing, and installed one of the smaller regulators in it(not having looked at the old one on the car). After the car didn't like that I swapped the old regulator with the very worn (short) brushes in it, and just kept an eye out for a battery light.

I ordered some brushes and "rebuilt" an old regulator I had from an extra alt, and installed that when we swapped motors. I'd found a video online about replacing the brushes, and it was easy enough to do.

Going to replace the brushes in the extra regulator as a spare.

(I'd have to dig up where I got the brushes)

I bought the cheap no-name ebay one and I hope I'm not sorry about that in the long run.

I don't see anyway to release the old brushes, it looks like the pigtail wire, if it has
one, is crimped in the back.
