Yes, the threads are only in the pump unit. So once you grind the head off the module drops right out (ask me how I know ...), and you will be able to easily turn out the bolt by hand right away (probably) or after getting it started with a pair of pliers (for certain).

Small grinding bit. They make one that's about the same size as th head of the bolt. I usually use the carbide grinding bit.

Thanks Matt!

Ok, that will be my next plan of attack. I won't have a chance to work on it until next week, but hopefully I'll then get it off and be in touch to send it to you for repair.

I had the same issue, the three most accessible screws came right out, the lower right screw stripped. I have a Foredom Flex Shaft tool, and tried several attempts with mirrors, lots of Mother of Pearls, I gave up trying from the top. Between the angle and everything being backwards with a mirror, it was too frustrating for me.

I put the car on ramps, and it was much easier to access the lower screw. With flex tool ( a dremel would also work) and carbide tip cutter, I ground out the old head.

Buy stainless screws to replace the torx head.

What is torque on these screws?
If below 20ft-lb, then vise-grip will do the job.

its access that is the issue, the torque is very low.

Luckily Volvo did place the ABS so you can remove the module. I looked at my 2008 Outback, the ABS electronic faced the front strut housing. There is no way to remove it without taking the entire hydraulic ABS block out of the car.

Which screw are you referring to as the lower right? The problem one on my car is the lower one towards the front of the car. I guess it would be the 'right' if you looked at it from the side the module is on, or 'left' if you're looking at it from the drivers side of the car....

Lower front is the one everybody has trouble with, because it is more difficult to access. I had to grind it off, I used a Dremel, it was a hassle and the module wasn't pretty coming out of it but I was able to get it done and I bet you will be too. There is actually a lot of easy real estate in there on an NA like yours.

I always just buy standard hex bolts to replace the torx ones, is there a good reason to use stainless?
