Dang, any coolant in the cylinders? I usually pull all the plugs at once and when I did a compression test one time, coolant came spraying out of the cylinder next to the one I was checking.

If you don't have it home yet, go ahead and have it towed home and jerk the head off. Should take about 4 hours.

I had all the spark plugs out, but sat the wires back in the ones without tester to keep debris out (had coil wore disconnected). I will have AAA move it to 'rents as my garage/driveway is not conducive to big jobs.

Any recommendations for machine shop in Pittsburgh area?

...and no coolant that I noticed. The plugs were all a mess, and they don't have many miles on them. They are the Bosch coppers that are often recommended as viable alternative. The one had a bit of sludge that didn't just look like oil...but I wouldn't say for sure it was coolant.

So it sounds like a spontaneous head gasket breach between #2 and #3? That is bizarre, I don't think I have ever heard of that in these white block engines. Overheated warped heads yes, but not just a blown out head gasket. Even more weird if there are 2 burnt valves.

Would be interesting to pull the head and have a look-see.

It doesn't sound like you were driving with a misfire? Have you had a CEL?

Optical fiber scope into the cylinders in question perhaps? Could just be a gasket breach of course

There's no advantage to that other than saving the 5 hours pulling the head, right?

I don't think there's anyway I'm cutting my losses; it will be fixed. So the head is coming off. I do fear that there could be damage to the piston area, but that will be visible once the head is off, right? And if there is, that's a Pandora's box I don't even no where to start with.

You could maybe look inside the engine to see if the pistons are badly damaged before doing the head deal. At that point a replacement engine might be the way to go although the 2.3's are a bit harder to find.

Acidic coolant could have been slowly eating away at the HG. Had a BMW motor that failed that way.
