Sounds like your water pump let go. Take off the timing belt cover and have a root around. Don't run again till you are sure pump is good.

Or not, closer read and it does sound like a blown hose. Fixit fill it and see what happens. Still you might have screwed up the headgasket. It can blow before idiot lights go on. replace hose and see how it runs, if it is rough running do a compression test or get a test kit from an auto parts store to look for exhaust gases in the coolant.

Also note that when you were low on coolant you could no longer rely on the gage for accurate temperature reading, and an overheat condition may have already been in progress or imminent
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Doing both hoses is definitely a good idea. If you bought the hoses online yourself they would be about $60 - 80 each for Volvo branded hoses, about $35 each for aftermarket. The Volvo branded ones are much better ... do you know which your mechanic uses? New O-rings is a good idea but that's high, you can get the whole plastic coupler with all new o-rings from Volvo for $45 (http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-h ... 70-s70-v70).

The 1.5 hours labor there is no way around, that is book rate for the job.

I have only heard of the hydrocarbon testers that work on a color change basis.

What kind of tester are you using that provides a number like 138?
